Your personal safety when searching for a job


LSE Careers and many other reputable job sites have strict approval processes when deciding whether to post jobs and opportunities. You can find the full terms and conditions employers who are posting on CareerHub must follow by reading the vacancy terms and conditions on the employer website. It is still important however that you undertake due diligence with any of your job searches.

Whilst the following checklist won't cover all eventualities, asking these questions will give you more information to make a decision if you have any concerns about personal safety:

Ensure that the employer is genuine before meeting for an interview

  • Check the website is legitimate:
    • Look out for spelling mistakes, broken English, major grammatical errors, and if the text on the site doesn't make sense.
    • Find out who owns the web domain, it is free to check these details on websites such as ScamAdviser.
    • Check the contact details are consistent with those given to you, if in doubt call them.
    • Look at the website privacy policy and company history. These may give you an idea of how long the company has been operating for, their mission statement and ethical stance.
  • Check the email addresses and telephone numbers - professional organisations will use company email addresses and searchable contact numbers.
  • Speak to the Human Resources department of the organisation in question or in the case of a smaller organisation, the person who has responsibility for HR matters.
  • Some organisations will also be listed on relevant trade/association websites e.g. is a recruitment agency a member of the REC? Is the organisation a member of CBI, or listed with the Charity Commission and Companies House? Organisations who are members of industry bodies often indicate this on their websites.

Be careful with your personal information

  • Only share your National Insurance Number, passport number, bank details and other personal information if you are sure the company is reputable and the job advertisement is genuine.
  • Avoid including your National Insurance number on your CV.
  • Never send any physical forms of ID to an organisation e.g. passports, National Insurance cards, bank cards, driving licenses, national identity cards, birth certificates.
  • Do not share any personal information via a website unless https:// is at the start of the url and that a padlock or key symbol is displayed in your browser.

Be aware of fictitious job advertisements and offers

These might include:

  • Getting offered a job you didn't apply for
  • 'Get rich quick' schemes
  • Jobs that require you to make an upfront payment
  • Job offers made on social media
