Michael Martins

Economist, Institute of Directors

MSc in Economic History, 2013

Why did you choose LSE, and why did you choose your programme of study?

Global brand. Economic History seemed to help situate economic analysis in reality

Overall, how do you look back on your LSE experience?

Best year of my life and it was crucial to helping me get to where I am and shaping who I've become.

Please describe your career path to date:

After submitting my dissertation, I worked for the UNDP in Istanbul, doing macroeconomic reform recommendations for countries in the region. I then moved back to Toronto to work for the Mayor, John Tory, on his campaign. I then moved back to London and took a job at the Institute of Directors as an economist.

Why did you choose your current job?

It combined many different elements I was interested in. I do economic analysis, engage with the media, and work with politicians and policymakers to achieve discernible goals that make the UK a stronger country and economy.

Tell us about your current job:

I work in London where I undertake the economic research that underpins the arguments that the IoD makes to government. I engage with the media and policymakers on a daily basis to help influence policymaking.

What advice do you have for LSE students who are looking to enter a similar profession to you?

Be as inclusive as possible. You'll never know who will be useful when.
