Choosing your postgraduate programme

    Search by subject for Masters and PhD programmes. Their 'information centre' gives advice on choosing programmes, funding, testing and making a good application. It is primarily targeted at a USA audience but also useful for international students.

  • Peterson's

    Search facility for graduate programmes and an advice section for international students.

  • US News Rankings

    Provides ranking information on doctoral programmes, e.g. rankings of doctoral programmes in the social sciences and humanities are based on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to academics in each discipline.

Applying

The primary source for information on application requirements, processes, deadlines and fees are the institutional and departmental websites for the programmes you are considering applying to.

Funding

The biggest source of funding for both US and international students wishing to undertake postgraduate study in the USA are the universities, colleges and schools themselves. Therefore, look on the institutional and departmental websites for the programmes you are considering applying to. Listed below are some resources to help you research and apply for additional sources of funding though independent scholarships and grants.

  • American Association of University Women

    Offers Fellowships to US and international graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

  • American Psychological Association (APA)

    Association for Psychologists in the U.S.

  • American Sociological Association

    Helps sociologists in their work.

  • BUNAC

    Bunac Best Scholarships are 'top up' grants available to students intending to undertake a postgraduate course in the USA or Canada.

  • Council of Graduate Schools

    Comprehensive list of graduate fellowship opportunities at Masters and PhD level, many are for US citizens only but there are several open to international students.

  • eduPASS

  • Fulbright Commission

    The Fulbright Commission's US Educational Advisory Service (EAS) is the UK's primary source of free information on study in the USA. Also find information about the Fulbright Award.

    Available for UK citizens applying to undertake postgraduate study at Harvard or MIT.

  • P.E.O. International

    Open to women of all nationalities (other than US or Canadian citizens) applying for postgraduate study in the USA or Canada.

  • The American Political Science Association

    Leading professional organization for the study of political science

  • The Thouron Award

    For postgraduate study at the University of Pennsylvania by UK citizens. There are also awards for US citizens.

  • Wingate Scholarships

    Applications from specified nationalities, resident in the UK and planning to undertake doctoral and postdoctoral studies in the USA may be eligible.
