Who is MOS aimed at?
MOS is aimed at people who have existing knowledge of an application and wish to validate their skills. The exams test you on a wide breadth of knowledge of each application, and require you to complete tasks that are a random mix of basic and intermediate levels.
Beginners can still join the MOS programme, but the learning curve will be steeper. If you are new to an application it will take longer and require more commitment.
Which certification will help me most?
We recommend that you start with an application that you already have knowledge of. Most employers expect skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint and we recommend these as a starting point.
What level should I start at?
There are no pre-requisites for any of the exams and you can start at any level you wish. Excel Expert is the most difficult of all the exams and we recommend everyone sit the Excel Associate exam first.
How much time does it take to complete a certification?
Microsoft states that estimates that an individual that each MOS exam requires approximately 40 hours of preparation. Even if you are already a confident user of your chosen product, you will still need to do some prep. We recommend the following as a minimum:
Which version of Office can I study?
We are currently only offering exams in Office 365/Office 2019 which is available free to download with your Office 365 account.
We no longer offer exams in Office 2016, 2013 or 2010.
How can I study for MOS if I only have access to a Mac?
As campus is closed we are unable to currently provide access to public computers that have GMetrix SMS and Office 365 installed on them.
How long is the exam?
Each exam lasts 50 minutes and you will need to be online at least 5 minutes before the exam start or you may not be able to complete the exam.
How do I book an exam?
To book your exam please email digital.skills.lab@lse.ac.uk. Exams are only available online and subject to availability. We need at least one week notice to book a slot but cannot guarantee your preferred time. We strongly recommend that you create a study plan and book an exam slot as far in advance as possible.We will also send you information on how to purchase an exam voucher.
Can I sit the exam remotely?
Exams are currently only available online until further notice and subject to the following technical requirements:

Laptop or desktop with Windows 10 or Mac OSX Mojave 10.14, High Sierra 10.13, or Sierra 10.12

Chromebooks: we recommend having the most current OS

Keyboard and mouse

Recommended minimum screen resolution of 1280 x 800

The preferred internet browser is Chrome. Internet Explorer, Edge, and Safari are also acceptable

A bandwidth download speed of at least 5Mbps*

Tablets & phones are prohibited
*Important: Before using ‘Certiport Exams from Home’, we strongly encourage all users to test their bandwidth to verify it is adequate and ensure the session will not be interrupted. A reputable third-party site you may use is www.speedtest.net. Ensure other members of your household are offline during the bandwidth test and during your actual exam session.
What do I need to pass my exam?
Exams are marked out of 1000 points and you need to achieve 700 or higher to pass.
When will I know if I passed my exam?
When you complete your exam and submit it for marking you will be notified immediately whether you passed or failed.
What do I do if I fail my exam?
If you wish to re-sit your exam you will need to wait a minimum of 24 hours. Email digital.skills.lab@lse.ac.uk to book a new date. You will also need to purchase a re-sit exam at £10 from the eshop.
