Celebrate with us on campus

at the end of year celebrations

Celebrating the graduating class of 2021!

We are delighted to invite you to in-person end of year celebrations this summer!

Following the cancellation of the July ceremonies, and in addition to virtual celebrations taking place this summer, we wanted to arrange an in-person event for those of you that will be in the UK in July, with the aim of coming together to celebrate your time at LSE, with friends, family, and faculty.

The end of year celebrations will consist of a departmental reception as well as the opprtunity to hire academic dress and book professional photography. We have included further information about each option below, as well as frequently asked questions:

Departmental End of Year Receptions

End of year receptions will take place on-campus and we have arranged two marquees to host these events, one on LSE's plaza (outside the Library) and one on the LSE Square (outside the Centre Building), restrictions permitting.

The receptions will provide an opportunity for graduates that are in the UK in July to catch-up with friends and faculty from their department, over refreshments and nibbles.

The receptions are ticketed events and graduates can book tickets for themselves and up to a maximum of two guests.

Graduands have been emailed with information about how to book tickets.

If you would like to attend, please book your place by Tuesday 15 June 2021. It is unlikely that we will be able to accommodate booking requests after this deadline, so please book in good time.

Receptions will last around 90 minutes.

Graduation Photography

Our official ceremony photographers, Tempest, will be available on campus between 5-22 July 2021.

Please visit their webpage if you'd like to book a photography slot - a direct link has been included in our email to graduands. Please note that you will need to pay a £10 deposit at time of booking (the deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your photograph order).

If you are planning to attend a departmental end of year reception (see above), we recommend booking and co-ordinating photography for the same day as your reception.

Photography studios will be located on the 5th floor of the Old Building in the Senior Common Room and will operate between 9am-6pm.

Tempest offer a range of photography packages and products. To view the range go to www.tempest-graduations.co.uk select ‘London School of Economics’ in the drop-down menu and enter one of the upcoming photography dates.

If you have any questions about the products, staff will be available at the photo session to answer them.

Academic Dress

You also have the option to hire academic dress for your photography session and/or departmental reception.

Academic dress is optional for the departmental reception, you are more than welcome to attend without academic dress if you prefer.

Academic dress is available to book via our official supplier, Ede and Ravenscroft. Graduands have also been emailed information about how to book academic dress.

You will need to know the following information when ordering your gown:

  • Height
  • Head circumference
  • Chest size measurements
  • Day/time of your reception

All queries relating to gown hire should be directed to Ede and Ravenscroft.

Collecting/returning your academic dress

Ede and Ravenscroft will be on campus between 5-22 July 2021 so that you can collect your ordered academic dress on the day of your departmental reception/photography session.

Academic dress will be available to collect from the 5th floor of the Old Building in the Senior Dining Room (SDR) and will be open between 9am-6pm.

You should return your academic dress after your reception. Gowns must be returned by 6pm at the latest.

Top tip:

If you plan to share content for your virtual departmental ceremony, why not create your content whilst you have access to your hired academic dress – you can then wear academic dress in any photo/video you wish to create for your virtual ceremony!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still attend the end of year departmental reception if I defer assessments?

Yes, students who defer assessments this summer are still more than welcome to attend the departmental receptions. The departmental receptions are an end of year celebration rather than formal graduation event.

I'm currently overseas, what happens if I cannot attend?

We completely understand that not all students will be able to attend the departmental receptions due to travel restrictions, the pandemic etc. The purpose of the departmental reception is to provide those who are in the UK at the time with an opportunity to come together on campus. We do not expect graduands to travel or pay a lot of money to travel for these events.

Irrespective of whether you attend the departmental reception, you will still be invited to attend an in-person ceremony in the future, which will include the opportunity for gown hire and photography.

Will I (and my guests) be required to take a COVID-19 test before the departmental reception?

We are organising the departmental receptions on the premise that lockdown restrictions will be lifted on 21 June 2021. Should restrictions, such as social distancing and limits on events, remain in place on that date, the departmental receptions will not be able to go ahead.

With regards to any minor ongoing Covid-19 related restrictions that might still be in place after 21 June, such as wearing a mask and testing, we will be following any School and government guidelines that are in place at the time of the event. We will continue to update these FAQs as and when information becomes available and will of course also contact graduands regarding any changes that might impact their attendance at departmental receptions

Will I need to hire academic dress again if I plan on attending a future in-person graduation ceremony?

Academic dress is compulsory for in-person graduation ceremonies.

Even if you hire academic dress to attend the departmental reception this summer, you will be required to hire academic dress again if you plan on attending an in-person graduation ceremony in the future.

As academic dress is optional for this summer's departmetnal reception, if you plan on attending a ceremony in the future and do not want to incur costs twice, you may prefer to not hire academic dress for this summer's events and wait until you can attend an in-person ceremony.

Can I request extra tickets?

Due to capacity restrictions, it is not possible to request/book extra tickets. Students can book up to a maximum of two guest tickets only.

Can children attend the receptions and do they require a ticket?

Children are welcome at the receptions. However, please note that children require a guest ticket to attend. Students can book up to a maximum of two guests tickets only, so please bear this in mind. The same rules apply even if one of your guests is a child.

Children 12 months and under can attend without a ticket if they are carried in a baby carrier for the event.

Due to limited capacity and storage, we cannot accommodate prams etc. at the events.

Please also keep in mind that the receptions are standing room only. They are not seated events.

Finally, please do not worry if you are not able to attend these events. The events are an additional supplement to the virtual offering this summer, and we are committed to providing all graduates impacted by the pandemic the opportunity to attend an in-person graduation ceremony in the future.

We very much look forward to seeing those of you that can attend these events in the summer, and we cannot wait to celebrate with you all virtually this year and in-person in the future!
