LSE salary scales

Staff paid on LSE / Higher Education scales

Most staff employed by the School are paid on the LSE single spine, implemented as part of the School's pay framework agreement in 2006.

Pay awards are negotiated at a national level by the new Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (new JNCHES), which includes representatives of the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA) and Higher Education unions, including the University and College Union (UCU), UNISON and Unite.

For information on the national pay award negotiations, please visit: 2023-24 New JNCHES pay round (ucea.ac.uk)

National pay award update (February 2023): After being brought forward to an earlier date in recognition of the cost-of-living pressures on staff, the pay negotiations have now concluded and, in accordance with the information and advice issued at a national level, the School is moving forward with implementing the 2023/24 pay award.

The total pay award is as follows:

  • 7% increase up to step 5 of salary band 2
  • 6% increase for staff on step 5.5 of salary band 2 up to step 17 of salary band 4
  • 5% increase for staff on step 17.5 of salary band 4 or more

This year's pay award will exceptionally be applied in two stages:

1 February 2023: All staff will receive an increase of either 2% or £1,000 (whichever is greater). This will be paid in March and backdated to 1 February 2023.

1 August 2023: Staff will receive the balance of the amount paid in February and the total award. Payment will be made in August.

The salary scales have been updated and links are provided below.

The pay scales are available to view in PDF format.
