Martin joined the LSE faculty in 1990 and is a Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Vice-Chair of the Academic Board. He has previously been Head of the Mathematics Department and an elected Academic Governor.
From Paisley, in the west of Scotland, near Glasgow, he studied for a BSc at the University of Glasgow and subsequently a PhD at the University of London (RHUL and LSE). He has an MA in Higher and Professional Education from the Institute of Education and was a member of the first cohort on LSE's Leadership Development Programme.
His research interests are mainly in the mathematical theory underpinning machine learning and data science. He has published three research monographs and a number of papers in this area, details of which can be found here.
Martin has taught a wide variety of courses at LSE and has been heavily involved in transnational education and distance learning projects. Recognition for his teaching has included the inaugural LSE Students' Union Teaching Excellence Award for Sharing Expertise and Knowledge and LSE Education Excellence Awards. He is co-author of two successful undergraduate textbooks.
