Last term, Prof. Leigh Gardner, Prof. Johan Fourie (from Stellenbosch University's Economics departement), Prof. Eric Schneider, and Nick Fitzhenry spent time together to work on a grant proposal looking at data from South Africa.
The death notices records that the team hopes to digitise would provide an unparalleled range of micro data including information on race, age, occupation, and cause of death. This work will shed new light on how the simultaneous processes of industrialization and tightening racial discrimination impacted different segments of the South African population. Johan Fourie also used this opportunity to present his work at an annual workshop on African economic history.
