Researching staff and students at LSE

Since 1895, LSE has maintained records on both staff and students allowing both academic researchers and family historians to trace LSE people.

Resources for research into LSE staff and students include:

  • LSE Register, 1895-1932: published in 1934 the register provides a list of all students who completed full courses leading to degrees, diplomas and certificates. It does not include occasional students or those following specialist schemes of study eg railway administrators or the army class. (Reference: LF449.L9 L84 Main Library order from Women’s Library Reading Room)
  • Register of Students, 1895-1919:   three volumes of registers of all students who paid fees for courses. A contemporary index to the volumes is available. (Reference LSE/UNREGISTERED/19/16-1919)
  • LSE Calendar 1903-: although the format of the Calendar changes over time it includes lists of LSE staff and from 1922 includes a list of those obtaining degrees. (Ref: LF449.L9 Main Library order from Women’s Library Reading Room)

Staff and student files

LSE has retained a series of staff and student files. The files date from the 1920s but can contain earlier material particularly for staff employed beyond 1920. The set is incomplete and does not cover all the specialist schemes of study.

We provide digital copies of historic staff and student files relating to deceased individuals. Enquiries should be sent to GLPD.Archives@lse.ac.uk giving the full name under which the student studied. A charge is made for this service and proof of death is required before files are sent out eg a death certificate, an obituary or death notice. Files are delivered by email or file transfer facility

Charges

  • £10 per file for orders of  1-4 files
  • £5 per file for orders of 5 or more files
