Peter Trubowitz is Professor of International Relations and Director of the Phelan US Centre and Associate Fellow at Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs.
Peter’s main research and teaching interests are in the fields of international security and foreign policy, with a special focus on the United States. His publications include Geopolitics and Democracy: The Western Liberal Order from Foundation to Fracture with Oxford University Press (Oxford University Press, 2023), Politics and Strategy: Partisan Ambition and American Statecraft (Princeton University Press, 2011) and Defining the National Interest: Conflict and Change in American Foreign Policy (University of Chicago Press, 1998), as well as articles in leading scholarly journals and in more popular venues. A frequent commentator on Bloomberg, BBC, CNBC, and other major media outlets, Peter’s work has been supported by grants and fellowships from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the John M. Olin Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, among others.
At the LSE, Peter has served as Head of the International Relations Department and is currently Academic Director of LSE Summer School. Before joining the LSE, Peter was Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. He has held visiting positions at Harvard, Princeton, University of California at San Diego, Universidad de Chile, Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) in Mexico City, Tsinghua University, and the Beijing Foreign Studies University, where he was the J. William Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer in American Foreign Policy. Peter received his PhD from MIT and his BA from Clark University.
