Wim is the CIMA Professor of Accounting & Financial Management in the Department of Accounting where he is currently the Deputy Head of Department. In earlier roles, he was Head of Department of Accounting for 10 years (2012-22) and Dean of Extended Education (2022-25), covering all non-degree programs across the entire LSE, such as Executive Education and Online as well as LSE’s International Program and its Summer School.

Academically, Wim’s research interests primarily focus on the study and teaching of performance measurement, evaluation, and incentives. Wim has published in several academic and practitioner journals in these areas and is an author of the leading textbook, Management Control Systems (Pearson), now in its fifth edition. He has won several awards for his research, as well as for his teaching and service, including the AAA Notable Contribution to Management Accounting Literature Award (three times) and the AAA Outstanding International Educator Award.

Wim was the President of the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA), Chair of the Publications Committee of the European Accounting Association (EAA) and also served on the AAA Board as a Director and on the Finance Committee of the Royal Economics Society (RES). Wim currently chairs the AICPA-CIMA R&D Panel and is a member of AICPA-CIMA’s Thought Leadership group.

Wim is or has been on the Editorial Board of a dozen journals and has been the Editor-in-Chief for the maximum 10-year tenure (2015-24) of his area’s main field journal, Management Accounting Research (Elsevier), where he continues in the role of Consulting Editor.

Wim has also held visiting professor roles at ESSEC (France); Erasmus School of Economics (Netherlands); Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management (China); and as the Yuji Ijiri Distinguished Lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University (USA).

Wim earned his PhD (Economics), Master (Management), and Bachelor (Economics) degrees from Ghent University in his native Belgium, though with study exchanges/visits along the way, such as during the PhD at the University of Southern California.
