You can use the form below to request to use the Steinway piano in the Shaw Library. Authorisation to use the Steinway piano will only be given for public music events requiring a high quality instrument and must be booked through the LSE Events Office by a department of the School or the LSESU Music Society. For all other occasions, including rehearsals, performances where the piano is an accompanying instrument, or where the piano is to be used for background music please use the Bosendorfer piano.
We kindly request that unless you have the Shaw Library booked via Room Bookings for an event then the Bosendorfer piano is not used as this can disturb users of the library as well as staff in nearby offices. Those wishing to practice on a piano need to join the LSESU Music Society which will allow them to book the Music Practice Room.
The School reserves the right to refuse authorisation to use the Steinway. We are not able to process requests submitted at less than two weeks' notice.
Please note: the piano is tuned on a fairly regular basis during the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, as it is used regularly for the lunchtime concerts and so it is highly unlikely we would insist users had to have the piano tuned during this time. Outside of these periods, if the piano has not been tuned for a significant amount of time, we may insist that a condition of use (to maintain the piano's upkeep) is that the user has the piano tuned and covers the cost. Whether or not tuning is required to be paid for by the user for the maintenance of the piano will be at the discretion of the Events Office at all times.
