Business, Energy and the Economy

Financial Inclusion Strategy - Treasury Committee

The Committee will examine whether the Government's Financial Inclusion Strategy identifies and addresses the key barriers to inclusion, and whether its objectives, resources, and delivery plans are likely to achieve meaningful and measurable change. 

Deadline: 12 January 

Regulating for Growth - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

The National Audit Office is examining whether the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), HM Treasury (HMT) and regulators are aligned in their understanding of how to regulate for growth. Proceeding from the NAO’s report due for publication in early 2026, the PAC will take evidence from senior officials from these Departments on how effectively growth is being promoted through regulation, and what challenges currently exist in this area for regulators and government. 

Deadline: 22 January

Tax Support for Entrepreneurs: Call for Evidence - Treasury Consultation

The Treasury is seeking views on the effectiveness of existing tax incentives, and the wider tax system, for business founders and scaling firms, and how the UK can better support these companies to start, scale and stay in the UK. Responses will be considered when developing further potential reforms to tax support for entrepreneurs.

Deadline: 28 February

Large business tax compliance - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

In 2026 the National Audit Office will publish its report examining whether HMRC's approach to the taxing of large businesses is delivering value for money. Proceeding this, the Committee will take evidence as it scrutinises the processes surrounding large business tax compliance.

Deadline: 5 March

Communities, Housing, Local Government and Transport

Home buying and selling reform - MHCLG Consultation

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government is consulting on proposals to simplify and shorten the processes required to buy and sell a home. 

Deadline: 29 December

Unlocking land for housing - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

The Committee is examining how effectively the government is making land available for housing development, and is calling for evidence on this issue.

Deadline: 23 February

Technology, Culture, Media and Sport

AI Growth Lab - DSIT Call for Evidence

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is seeking views on the proposed AI Growth Lab that would support growth and responsible AI innovation by making targeted regulatory modifications under robust safeguards and with careful monitoring.

Deadline: 2 January

Health and Social Care

Egg donation and freezing - Women and Equalities Committee

This inquiry will examine whether women donating and freezing their eggs do so with sufficient information about the process, health impacts and consequences and whether the current regulatory framework provides sufficient safeguards to people who go through these procedures.

Deadline: 9 January

Supporting people with frailty outside hospitals - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

The National Audit Office have published a study in December 2025 examining how effectively government is tackling the challenges of growing numbers of people with frailty. Proceeding from the NAO’s December 2025 report, the PAC will hear from senior officials at the DHSC and NHSE with likely topics including how effectively government, primary care and community services are working to detect people at risk of frailty and delivering support for them.

Down Syndrome Act 2022 Draft Statutory Guidance - DHSC Consultation

The Department for Health and Social Care are inviting responses to test the draft statutory guidance for the Down Syndrome Act 2022. 

Deadline: 28 January

Children and Education

Reading for Pleasure - Education Committee

This inquiry by the Education Committee will look at the reasons behind the decline in the number of children reading for pleasure and what can be done to reverse this trend.

Deadline: 9 January 

Post-16 level 3 and below pathways - DfE Consultation

The Department for Education is seeking views on the design and implementation of a third, vocational pathway at level 3 and two new pathways at level 2 in post-16 education.

Deadline: 12 January

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs): call for insights and evidence - DfE Consultation

Building on the first call for evidence in March to May 2025, DFE is seeking insights or opinions on the full suit of NPQs and research evidence which may inform updates to the evidence-base underpinning 7 NPQ frameworks.

Deadline: 20 February

Open Consultation on Establishing the Child Protection Authority in England - DfE Consultation

The Department for Education are seeking views on setting up a national body called the Child Protection Authority to improve child protection. The aim is for the CPA to make the multi-agency child protection system clearer, more unified and ensure there are ongoing improvements through effective evidence-based support. The consultation is seeking views on the CPA’s proposed functions, governance, and interaction with existing bodies.

Home Affairs, Work and Pensions

Analysis of the asylum system - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

The National Audit Office has published its 2025 end-to-end analysis of the asylum system. Based on the NAO’s 2025 analysis, the PAC will hear from senior government officials across the several departments involved in the asylum system, as it carries out its full-spectrum overview of the system’s operation. 

Deadline: 8 January

Earned Settlement - Home Office and others consultation

The Home Office, DCMS, DWP and the Treasury are consulting on how the current settlement system, which gives someone the permanent right to live in the UK, should be reformed and how those reforms should be implemented.

Deadline: 12 February

The Use of Facial Recognition in Law Enforcement - Home Office Consultation

The Home Office wants to ensure that the law keeps pace with tech and provides clear rules for the public and and law enforcement. The consultation seeks views on issues including which tech should be covered by the new framework - such as biometric, inferential, and object recognition tools - and which organisations it should apply to, as well as how and when these technologies should be used.

Deadline: 12 February

The Access to Work Scheme - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

In 2026, the National Audit Office will publish a report looking at the challenges in the operation of the Access to Work scheme. Proceeding from the National Audit Office's finding's, the Committee will take evidence from senior DWP officials on how the Department is addressing these challenges. Likely topics are what impact backlogs have had on claimants and employers.

International and Defense

Affordability of the Defence Investment Plan - Public Accounts Committee Inquiry

In 2026, the National Audit Office will publish a report assessing whether MoD’s capability, goals and commitments are realistic and deliverable within its forecasted budgets. Proceeding from the NAO’s findings, the Committee will take evidence from senior MoD officials as it scrutinises the affordability of the MoD’s investment plan.

Legal and Constitution

Written Parliamentary Questions - Procedure Committee

There are concerns that the Written Parliamentary Questions system is not fit for purpose and his inquiry willl review WPQs - their purpose, their use, and the processes that underpin them, to identify improvements.

Deadline: 9 January 

Census 2031 Topics - ONS Consultation

The Office for National Statistics is seeking views on how census data is currently used and how the 2031 census can ask questions to better reflect that. 

Deadline: 4 February. 

Sustainability, Net Zero and Environment

International Climate Policy - Select Committee Inquiry

The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee is launching an inquiry to investigate how the Government can best demonstrate international leadership on climate policy.  

Deadline: 7 January

Managing the future of UK Oil and Gas - Select Committee Inquiry

The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee is launching an inquiry into the role of oil and gas in the energy transition, the management of the UK’s North Sea energy basin and how the transition away from gas in home heating might be achieved.

Deadline: 7 January

The UK’s International Climate Finance (ICF) – Select Committee Inquiry

UK ICF plays a crucial role in fulfilling the UK’s obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement and advancing the Government’s ambition to establish the UK as a global leader in international climate action, though there have been significant cuts and changes in spending parameters. This inquiry will consider the effectiveness of the UK’s ICF portfolio in driving systemic change and how it can maximise value for money and impact by learning lessons and leveraging alternative routes to fulfil its future commitments despite reduced resources.

Deadline: 12 January

Exploring the role of alternative clean heating solutions - DESNZ Consultation

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero are seeking views on low carbon heating technologies that could be used to decarbonise heat in the small number of properties that may not be suitable for heat pumps and heat networks.

Deadline: 10 February

Information on the new POST notes, which are used in Parliament by MPs, the House Libraries and members of the Lords, can be found here along with links to other notes that POST are developing and plan to develop in the future. 

Parliament for Researchers: free online training sessions from UK Parliament

The UK Parliament's Knowledge Exchange Unit holds online training sessions on how to use research to engage with Parliament. Sessions are tailored both to different roles and career stages, and to the varied ways in which academics can engage with the policymaking process - for example, how to engage with Select Committees, and how to write for a parliamentary audience.
