Accessing eduroam via the LSE wireless network (Windows 7/Vista)

You must have at least Windows Vista Service Pack 1 security patches installed to be able to connect to the wireless network. You must also have a wireless adapter.

Users are also required to install and regularly update antivirus software.

Some wireless network adapters are often bundled with software from the manufacturer; you will need to disable this software and use Microsoft's built-in configuration tool instead.

To configure your wireless connection using Microsoft's built-in configuration tool:

1. Locate an area with a good wireless signal using the LSE Wireless map
2. Click the Start button
3. In the Start Search box, type services.msc and press Enter
   If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation
4. In the Services window, scroll down and double-click WLAN AutoConfig
5. From the Startup type drop-down list, select Automatic
6. Under Service status, click Start
7. Click OK
8. Close the Services dialog box.
9. Click Start | Control Panel | Network and Internet
10. Click Network and Sharing Center
11. From the Tasks list, select Manage wireless networks
12. Click Add
13. In the window that opens, select Manually create a network profile
14. Enter or select the following details:
    Network name: eduroam
    Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type: AES
    Ensure that Start this connection automatically is ticked and click Next
    
    A new window will open informing you that you have successfully added eduroam.
    
    
15. Select Change connection settings
16. Select the Security tab
17. Ensure that WPA2 Enterprise, AES, and Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) are selected
18. Ensure that Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network or Remember my credentials... each time I'm logged on is ticked
19. Click Settings..
20. Tick Validate server certificate
21. In the Connect to these servers: box, enter eduroam.lse.ac.uk
22. Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities: tick Global Sign Root CA
23. Untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)
24. ClickOK|OK|OKto close the active dialog boxes
25. Close the Manually connect to a network window
26. You will be warned that Additional information is required to connect to eduroam, click the balloon
27. When prompted, enter the following information:
28. Username:Your LSE email address e.g.j.bloggs@lse.ac.uk
29. Password:Your LSE network password
30. ClickOK.
31. Leave the logon domain field blank and click OK
32. Once you're connected, test your connection using your Internet browser by opening the LSE website at http://www.lse.ac.uk

If you experience problems connecting to the wireless network, apply the following DHCP settings to your wireless connection.

To change DHCP settings:

1. Click Start | Control Panel | Network and Sharing Center
2. From the Tasks list, select Manage network connections
3. Right-click your Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties
4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
5. Make a note of your IP address and DNS server address
6. Select Obtain IP address automatically
7. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically
8. Click OK | Close

Most computers are configured to join a Local Area Network by default, but should you experience problems due to broadband or dial-up settings, you should check Internet Option Connection settings.

To change Internet Option Connection settings:

1. Click Start | Control Panel | Network and Sharing Center
2. Double click Internet Options
3. Select the Connections tab
4. Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present
5. Click LAN Settings
6. Tick Automatically detect settings
7. Untick any other options

If you receive a 'Duplicate name exists on the network' error, you should change the computer name.

To change the computer name:

1. Log on as an Administrator if necessary
2. Click Start | Control Panel | System and Maintenance
3. Select Remote Settings from the task list
4. Select Computer Name tab
5. Click Change
6. Enter T-USERNAME as your computer name (your LSE network username)
7. Click OK twice
8. Restart your computer

Some users find that their device automatically connects to The Cloud WiFi network. The Cloud is for use by guests without eduroam login; all LSE staff and students should connect to eduroam.
To make eduroam your default WiFi network (Windows 7):

1. Click Start | Control Panel | Network and Sharing Center
2. Click Manage Wireless Networks
3. Select eduroam and click Move up until eduroam is at the top of the list
