Charles Stafford is Vice President and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Faculty Development) and Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics. He previously served the School as Vice Chair of the Appointments Committee. In the VPFD role, he takes a lead on the School’s policy and practices with respect to recruitment, review, promotion, pay and career development of academic staff. He also has a long-standing interest in issues related to equality, diversity and inclusion and currently serves as co-chair of the UK Network of EDI Academic Leads (NEDIAL).
Trained as a social anthropologist, Charles taught in the LSE’s Anthropology Department for a number of years and is a leading anthropologist of China and Taiwan. His work has focused in particular on issues related to the anthropology of learning and cognition – including child development, emotion and identity, morality and ethics, and the psychology of economic life. His most recent book is Economic life in the real world: logic, emotion and ethics (Cambridge 2020). He was elected Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 2018.
