On 12 June 2025, thanks to the support of ISAP’s Global Research Fund, Dr Carolin Hulke together with her research partners Dr Michael Tuffour from the University of Environment and Sustainable Development and Dr Robert Manteaw from the University of Ghana convened a one-of-a-kind event in Accra with researchers and local stakeholders to explore the current challenges and future potentials of carbon markets for sustainable development in Ghana.
This workshop brought together over 25 key stakeholders—including the Environmental Protection Agency, private-sector project developers, NGOs, and academics—alongside 30+ students and civil society actors for a vibrant exchange of ideas and discussion.
Morning sessions explored Ghana’s emerging Article 6 cooperation agreements and early lessons from pilot projects in agriculture, solar energy, and e-mobility. In the afternoon, roundtables connected early-career researchers with stakeholders to align research with real-world challenges—particularly around measuring co-benefits and ensuring a just transition for rural communities.
The day concluded with a co-developed research agenda focused on:
- Equitable revenue allocation of generated carbon credit units
- Financing and enhancing smallholder farmers and local entrepreuneurs' participation and value capture
- Institutional transparency safeguards and regional collaboration
These priorities will guide future collaborations between LSE and Ghanaian partners and have already informed a forthcoming discussion paper. The co-organisers are planning to develop a larger research proposal, building on the workshop’s momentum and the open research questions identified. They are also working on a joint academic publication to be submitted in early 2026.
