I liked the idea to use a wider range of my voice. The idea that voice is something physical, an instrument, that we can 'travel with the story'. The fact that I can show all of me, instead of just staying in my comfort zone

Dr Ellen Holtmaat, Fellow - Department of International Relations, LSE (on Sue Henry's session)

This academic year, we will be running sessions online in Zoom and on-campus.

We run two kinds of voice-coaching sessions: masterclasses (two-hour long group sessions with eight to 12 participants) and one-to-one sessions (under an hour with the session tailored to your unique requirements).

The sessions are led by experienced voice coaches, Delia Lloyd and Sue Henry. Both their profiles are available at the bottom of this page.

Communication and presentation skills for teaching: One-to-one with Sue Henry

The session is just under an hour and is an opportunity to work one-to-one with a voice coach. Prior to the session Sue will contact you to identify the areas you wish to develop so the content can be tailored to your requirements so that whatever level you are at as a speaker, you will develop your ability. If you are a nervous speaker you will be given tips and techniques to develop confidence, if you are an experienced speaker you will be given guidance about what next level looks like for you. Either way you will learn how to come more fully into the room, engage and connect with your listeners, and build focus on the areas of expertise you personally care the most about.

Discover and use your authentic voice: voice-coaching masterclass with Sue Henry

In groups of ten, participants work through the basics – voice, posture, body language,  and presence – while being guided through a range of exercises and activities. The sessions are two hours long and provide an informal, inclusive environment (some might say enjoyable!) for you to try out and practise new techniques, learn from your peers, and get feedback on your progress. You will be given a handout to refer to after the session so you can continue to develop your unique voice, grow in confidence, and build more effective relationships with your listeners.

Establishing presence in the classroom with Delia Lloyd

Establishing your presence in the classroom or lecture theatre hinges on using a range of communication tools including body language, voice and words to enhance your personal impact. You also need to approach teaching with a positive mindset. Participants will come away from this masterclass with greater confidence in their ability to manage connections, perceptions and relationships in the context of a classroom.

Engaging students in quantitative subjects

To be a successful teacher, you need to do three things: 1) Present key concepts and theories 2) Explain them using examples and evidence and 3) Engage and entertain. This workshop will show you how to do all of these things so as to communicate your ideas clearly, succinctly, and engagingly. Although all are welcome, the principal target for this workshop are those teachers that engage mainly with quantitative-oriented subjects. Topics covered include:

*The fight for attention

*Structuring a lesson

*Communication techniques for teaching quantitative topics

*Using graphs and visuals to maximum effect

*Presenting complex data

Sue Henry

About Sue Henry

Sue qualified in voice studies in 1993, has a certificate in drama therapy, is a qualified NLP practitioner, graduated in Movement Psychology with its founder Yat Malmgren, studied organisational behaviour and leadership at the Tavistock and Portman Foundation, and has followed a mindfulness practise daily since 2002.

Originally Sue qualified in music and theatre, worked for many years as an actor singer/songwriter and has a run of classical theatre roles under her belt and a 1983 hit single to her name. Since qualifying as a voice coach 30 years ago, she switched to the other side of the stage, using her performance expertise to support others in finding their own unique way to step up, speak out, and be heard.

She began in the media working with professional actors while also running the voice department and contributing to the development and establishment of an Acting BA and MA at University of East London. The last 25 years however, have seen her predominantly involved in executive and academic education, encouraging people to bring expression of what they deeply believe into what they do, and feed integrity into their creative innovation.

Amongst her clients are Reuters, the BBC, Imperial College, London Business School, PRS, Oxford University, RADA, British Airways, The Kings Fund, Google, Fierce Grace, Leicester University, London School of Economics and many 1-1 coaching and mentoring clients. You can read some of Sue’s ideas about the power of voice in her contributions to “Effective Presentation” published by Orion, and “Turning Point Moments” published by Capucia.

Known for her friendly, informal yet thorough approach Sue believes that to be productively effective as a speaker you need to be genuine, "you but more you" or, as Oscar Wilde whom she is fond of quoting said; “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken”.

She has repeatedly witnessed that when people connect and converse from a place of authenticity, our human voice can be key to finding creative and hopeful stories of resilience beyond our expectations. Her passion is enabling people to surprise themselves with the power of the voice they already have.

Connect. Converse. Create.
