LSE’s Education Career Track (ECT) Network and the Eden Centre are pleased to announce the second instalment of our new Talking Teaching events, which are open to colleagues from across the School with an interest in sharing practice and exploring different aspects of teaching and learning. The theme of our second event is ‘Designing Authentic Assessment’ and we are delighted to welcome Jen Harvey, Assistant Head, Academic Affairs at Dublin University of Technology (TU Dublin), who will share her experience of working to transform curricula at TU Dublin, with a focus on authentic assessment. We will also be joined by colleagues from LSE who will share their own assessment practices.
While ‘authenticity’ in assessment can be a contested term for many, recent work (McArthur 2023) challenges us to move beyond thinking about authentic assessment as relating to ‘the real world’ or the world of work, towards thinking about assessments ‘that matter’ – designing tasks that bring social value, foster in students a sense of agency, and which focus on the reason for the task, not just the performance of it.
Come and join us on Thursday 7 March, 2-3.30pm to hear from our speakers and think through ways to consider authenticity in your own assessment practices.
