UKCGE Supervisor recognition pathway

Professor Ernestina Coast has been awarded the title “UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisor” by the UK Council for Graduate Education. Her case was reviewed by a panel that said: This is an exemplary application, with all standards being very strong and providing excellent examples, reflection and evidence of development. It’s clear that this applicant is an excellent and committed supervisor, who, again, has much to teach and pass on to other supervisors.

Ernestina applied for this recognition via a supported pathway offered by the Eden Centre and we are again offering both newer (Recognised Associate Supervisor) and more experienced (Recognised Supervisor) supervisors this opportunity to meet and share practice.

We do this through the framework provided by the UKCGE for recognition of supervisory practice, and while applying for recognition is the ultimate aim of the pathway, last year's participants found the opportunity to learn from one another the most valuable aspect and colleagues are invited to take up this opportunity even if they might not see themselves applying for recognition of practice.  A participant from last year’s pilot commented: ‘The experience was illuminating, rewarding, and enjoyable. It was a rare opportunity to think about the challenges and joys of supervision. What I learned in our discussions will feed into my supervision and, I believe, make it more self-conscious and beneficial to my supervisees and co-supervisors.’

Peer groups will begin meeting in Winter Term. If this might be of interest, please contact Dr Alex Standen, Head of Academic Development for further details (a.m.standen@lse.ac.uk).
