LSE PhD supervisors are invited to join a small peer group in Winter Term 2026 who will use the UK Council for Graduate Education's Good Supervisory Practice Framework as a guide for sharing practice, discussing challenges and exploring new approaches to supervising students.
While applying for recognition is the ultimate aim of the pathway, previous participants found the opportunity to learn from one another the most valuable aspect. Colleagues are invited to take up this opportunity even if they might not see themselves applying for recognition of practice. A participant from the pilot commented: ‘The experience was illuminating, rewarding, and enjoyable. It was a rare opportunity to think about the challenges and joys of supervision. What I learned in our discussions will feed into my supervision and, I believe, make it more self-conscious and beneficial to my supervisees and co-supervisors.’
Next steps
- Interested colleagues are invited to contact Dr Alex Standen, Head of Academic Development for further details (a.m.standen@lse.ac.uk).
- The first meeting will take place towards the start of WT and the group will meet for 5 one-hour sessions.
- Applications for professional recognition of supervisory practice are made directly to the UKCGE with feedback and support provided by Eden.
Previous applicants
In 2024, Professor Ernestina Coast was awarded the title “UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisor” by the UK Council for Graduate Education. Her case was reviewed by a panel that said: This is an exemplary application, with all standards being very strong and providing excellent examples, reflection and evidence of development. It’s clear that this applicant is an excellent and committed supervisor, who, again, has much to teach and pass on to other supervisors. Ernestina applied for this recognition via the pilot.
