Identity Management

In 2025, the School will launch a dedicated Identity Management team within the Cyber Security division to streamline and enhance how we manage digital identities across LSE.

What is Identity Management?

A "digital identity" represents how each person interacts with our systems and infrastructure—both digital and physical. It’s what enables you to:

  • Access platforms, services, and systems you need for work or study.
  • Receive important documents, like HR communications and payslips.

With such a diverse community—including academic and professional staff, estates and catering teams, visiting professors, and short-term roles like summer interns—managing these identities accurately and securely is vital.

By building this team and supporting it with cutting-edge tools and technologies, we are committed to meeting the needs of our diverse community while staying ahead in security and flexibility.

Why this matters

The new team will help us:

  • Enhance security by offering a clear, centralised view of who has access to what.
  • Improve flexibility, adapting to the unique needs of each individual’s role.
  • Less admin: Automation will reduce manual workloads.

Note: the Identity Management team is not responsible for reallocation of work where capacity is increased by automation
  • Simplify onboarding for new joiners and hiring managers, making it faster and easier to get started.
  • Provide a one-stop-shop for all identity and access-related questions, so staff and students know exactly where to go for help.

Identity Now

We are excited to introduce Identity Now, a digital tool designed to simplify and centralise how we manage digital access for staff and students. This innovative system will automate key processes, reducing manual work and improving efficiency across the School.

What is Identity Now?

In the first phase, Identity Now will focus on streamlining the onboarding process for hiring and line managers. This means:

  • Less time spent on manual tasks like organising access and digital hardware for new starters.
  • A seamless, centralised system that integrates with HR to provide a smoother onboarding experience.

This new process integrates with the HR team and creates a centralised approach to onboarding for hiring and line managers at the School.

Benefits

  • Increased automation: Faster response times and fewer errors for identity-related requests.
  • Role-based access: Access to digital and physical resources will automatically align with an individual’s role, ensuring they have what they need as soon as their details are added to the system.
  • Adaptability: The comprehensive system makes it easier for us to adjust to external changes—like new working models or global events—while maintaining secure and consistent access across all users.
  • Operational efficiency: Hiring and line managers will no longer need to coordinate between multiple teams to ensure new starters are fully equipped on their first day.

LSE Partners

LSE is launching LSE Partners, a new platform designed to simplify how we manage identities for individuals who aren’t employees but play key roles within the School—such as contract and agency workers, interns, and ad-hoc appointments.

What is LSE Partners?

This platform will centralise and streamline the onboarding process for these non-employee partners and the LSE staff who support them. By tailoring access based on role requirements, LSE Partners ensures our partners have the digital and physical resources they need quickly and efficiently.

Benefits

  • Enhanced security: Clear, easily identifiable access provisions mean we can map, adapt, and renew access as needed, ensuring better control over who has access to LSE’s resources.
  • Automation: Automates access to apps, buildings, IT systems, and other essential infrastructure, reducing manual intervention.
  • Right-sized access: Ensures individuals receive the access they need—no more, no less—minimising unnecessary administration.
  • Improved onboarding: Delivers a smoother experience for partners joining LSE and for the staff who manage their onboarding process.
  • Greater visibility: Makes it easier to identify all third-party contractors with access to our digital and physical infrastructure.
  • Better auditing: Enhances our ability to audit and monitor third-party access, strengthening overall security and compliance.
