Using Zoom for Research Interviews

Under most situations, Zoom should be fine to use for conducting research interviews. There are, however, are a few things to bear in mind:

  • Always use the latest release of the Zoom client (5.0 at the time of writing). Zoom have recently improved their traffic encryption and required the use of passwords for meetings (preventing "Zoombombing").
  • We've updated our Zoom settings so that all LSE Zoom recordings data are stored in the EU at the Zoom datacentre in Germany.

Meeting recordings include all of the following:

    - Meeting video and audio
    - Webinar and phone recordings
    - voicemail
    - voicemail transcripts
    - custom greeting prompts

Account data and operation data will continue to be stored in the US.

  • The issues widely reported in the press around Zoom data being routed through China, and data from the Zoom iOS app being sent to Facebook, have both been rectified. No data from an LSE-initiated Zoom meeting will be routed through Zoom's China datacentre, even if there are participants within China.

Guides to Primary Research Online

The Library and Cyber Security have put together a guide that you can find on Moodle covering all aspects of doing primary research online, including different options for conducting online interviews.

There are two versions of the guide, on for students and one for staff – details supplied below:
