School position on generative AI

School position on the use of generative AI in assessment 2025/26

In advance of the start of the academic year, all academic departments must agree department-wide or course-level positions on the authorised use of generative AI in assessment within one of the following positions:

  • Position 1: No authorised use of generative AI in assessment.*

  • Position 2: Limited authorised use of generative AI in assessment.

  • Position 3: Full authorised use of generative AI in assessment.

*Unless your Department or course convenor indicates otherwise, the use of AI tools for grammar and spell-checking is not included in the full prohibition under Position 1.

Departments and/or course convenors are expected to clearly communicate their position to their students.

For more information, see the School Guidelines on the use of generative AI in education for the academic year 2024/25 (approved by Education Committee in Summer Term 2024). These guidelines will remain in place for 2026/27 as well.

The School periodically reviews its approach to the use of Generative AI in teaching, learning and assessment in consultation with staff and students.

Observed assessment policy

In June 2025, the School introduced an Observed Assessment policy on the use of generative AI in assessment.

In 2025/26, Education Committee approved the continuation of the policy into AY2026/27. The normal deadline for the Annual Course Guide Review (ACGR) of Tuesday 5 May 2026 applies for Departments to submit all assessment updates (alongside all other updates to course guides).

LSE Principles and Guidance for AI-assisted Marking and Feedback

In Autumn Term 2025, Education Committee approved a set of principles, accompanying guidance and scenarios to inform the use of AI-assisted marking and feedback at LSE. These principles and the accompanying guidance have been actioned for a pilot year in 2025/26 and will then be reviewed.
