Higher Education Statistics Agency

HESA collect and disseminate data about HE in the UK. This includes supporting HE institutions in submitting, processing and understanding the data.

HESA publishes open data on many aspects of the HE sector. This includes information about student numbers, staff demographics and finances of institutions.

Office for Students

The OfS is an independent public body that aims to make sure students succeed by working with HE institutions and reporting to the Department for Education.

The OfS produces a range of data and analysis on the HE sector. The following OfS data visualisations may be of interest to LSE staff:

Jisc

Jisc is the designated data body for the OfS (taking over from HESA in October 2022). The not-for-profit agency provides managed and brokered products and services for UK tertiary education and research.

Research Excellence Framework

The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in institutions that aims to secure world-class and dynamic research across the HE sector.

It is a process of review, carried out by expert panels in units of assessment based on subjects. Each submission to a panel is assessed on the quality of outputs, their impact beyond academia and the research environment.
