It’s my job to pave the way for all the young, gifted, and Black people that come after me.

My name is Ikenna Acholonu, which is a name that means “the strength of my Father” in Igbo, which is how I like to think of myself. I am honoured to be nominated for the Black History Month showcase. I have worked at LSE for 2 years at the Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa and it has been such a great experience to learn every day from my wonderful colleagues. Along with work, I joined LSE EmbRace less than a year ago and I feel so lucky to be a part of such a great community and to serve EmbRace as their Deputy Chair!

When I think of Black History Month, I think of a quote by James Baldwin that says, “Your crown has already been bought and paid for. All you need to do is put it on your head.” This quote reminds me of all the Black people who came before me who made it possible for me to be where I am today. It’s my job to pave the way for all the young, gifted, and Black people that come after me.
