 This page answers the most frequently asked questions about accommodation for staff at LSE.

Booking and general questions

Is there a minimum/maximum stay?

Short stays from just a single night are available, and the maximum stay in staff accommodation is 364 days. The best rates are available for stays of 29 days and more.

Who can stay in faculty accommodation?

Any LSE staff members, visiting researchers, teachers and lecturers, and visitors to administrative divisions. If you are not sure about your eligibility please contact us.

Students can't stay in faculty accommodation. But we have a large selection of student accommodation available. For more details visit: Accommodation for students

How do I make a booking?

You have two options, depending on how you want to pay for your booking:  

Option 1 - pay by card to book online
If you pay by credit or debit card, you can make a booking online. You'll need your card to pay for the booking straight away.

Option 2 - pay by IDN and contact us to book
If your department is going to pay for you with a budget code/internal debit note (IDN), please contact us to make the booking for you. You can still check availability online, but you won't be able to book. 

Please note: never send us your credit or debit card details over email or in the post.

Can my department book accommodation for me?

Yes, your department can book for you. They have two options: .

  • If they pay by credit or debit card, they can make the booking online.
  • If they are going to pay with a budget code/internal debit note (IDN), they need to contact us to make the booking. 

What are your terms and conditions?

Can I view the accommodation before I book?

We will always try our best to allow you to view the accommodation if you want to. Please bear in mind that if we are fully booked this may not be possible. The photographs on these pages provide a good representation of the accommodation.​

Do I need to pay a deposit?

The deposit required and payment frequency depend on the length of stay:

  • For stays of 29 nights or more a deposit of 29 nights rent is due on booking, rent is then payable monthly in advance.
  • For stays of between 7 and 28 nights, full payment is required at the time of booking.
  • For stays of six nights or less, full payment is required at the time of booking.

How can I pay?

We accept most credit and debit cards, LSE Internal Debit Notes (IDN) bank transfers and cheques. We cannot accept cash, American Express, JCB or Diners Club. Please note: never send us your credit or debit card details over email or in the post.

Can I reclaim the VAT on faculty accommodation if I'm from overseas?

No. Under Retail Export Scheme (VAT notice 704), the scheme is for the sale of goods only. It cannot be used for accommodation. See Retail Export Scheme - VAT notice 704, section 2.9

Facilities and services

When can I check in/out?

Our normal check-in time is from 3pm with check-out before 10:30am. However, if you need to arrive early or leave late this may be possible. Please contact us in advance of booking. If we cannot arrange early check-in/late check-out we may be able to store your bags for you.​​

Can I smoke in the apartment?

No. All our properties on and off campus follow a strict non-smoking policy. 

Can I have pets?

Only assistance dogs are allowed in any of the properties. Other pets are not permitted.

Is there air conditioning?

Unfortunately not. Also please bear in mind that due to health and safety legislation, window restrictors are in place in some buildings which limit the extent to which a window will open.

Is there car parking?

Most of the accommodation does not have on-site parking.

Bankside House and Carr-Saunders Hall offer guest car parking for a small charge. Where available, parking is offered on a first come, first served basis and cannot be booked in advance. Guests bringing vehicles must notify reception staff as to the details and registration number of their vehicle to avoid being clamped.

Please note that London operates a 'Congestion Charge' of £11.50 per day for vehicles entering the centre of the capital during peak hours. For more information please visit: Congestion Charge

Is there access to the LSE IT-network?

Yes. All locations have a data connection to the LSE network.

Is there wi-fi access?

Yes. All locations have wi-fi access.

Are meals included or available?

Faculty accommodation is sold on a self-catering basis.

At Bankside House, Carr-Saunders Hall and Passfield Hall, there is access to a student restaurant.

The Campus Apartments (5 Lincoln's Inn Fields and George IV Pub) are very close to our campus catering outlets. The meals served vary seasonally, for details, visit: LSE Catering

Is the accommodation serviced and/or cleaned?

All the accommodation will be cleaned prior to your arrival. Linen and towels are provided and your accommodation is serviced weekly.

Are the properties accessed by a lift?

Most of our accommodation has step free elevator access.
Please note the following exceptions:

  • Carr-Saunders Hall – several steps up to the main entrance but then lifts
  • George IV apartments – several flights of stairs to the apartments
  • Passfield Hall – three narrow flights of stairs to the apartment
