5 ways to make the most of Earth Hour

The day following the last day of term from 8:30-9:30pm the world will observe Earth hour. So what is Earth hour? It started as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney in 2007 and it has stuck around since then, and has gradually become an integral part in the movement for the environment, making millions aware about the planet and nature.

So what are we supposed to do during earth hour? It is in simple words an hour for you to #Connect2Earth switch off your lights and take in the electrifying energy of the earth. It’s an effort to make people conscious of their actions towards their planet. So then how can I make the most of this hour, you ask? Well, I can help with some suggestions, but really go with your gut and do whatever it takes for you to connect.

 1. Organise/Attend an event

Any event big or small solo or with a group, whatever helps to make a noise. A candle-march or a candle light dinner. As long your event is focused on giving attention to our planet.

 2. Stargazing

I mean, you should stargaze, earth hour or not. Because why wouldn’t you? What is more beautiful and satisfying than staring into nothingness and thinking about endless possibilities. Or go take a city walk, or cycle around town and really appreciate where you live.

3. Expand your knowledge

Probably too much to ask from a Kindle generation, but reading under candle light has its own charm and can help you connect with the earth in ways not thought of. (Reading a book about the earth is a bonus)

 4. Switch off completely

If possible, don’t scroll through Instagram or answer your mail or even look at your phone for that one hour. Because let’s be honest, that’s what we really need to switch off from.

 5. Make a resolution

Promise yourself and the earth one thing, pledge one thing to live more sustainably. There are so many things in our everyday activities that harms the planet, give up on one. Anything.

Let’s be honest, it’s the day after term ends most of us are exhausted to be doing anything at all. We’ll sleep all day, won’t we? Yes, it’s a good time to catch up on that as well, but even so remember to at least give the planet a thought before shutting out.
