Where are the sports facilities in LSE?
Several experts have confirmed that exercising not only helps the physical body but equally improves mental alertness, knowledge retention, problem-solving abilities, endurance and stress management. In other words, exercising and sports can help maximise students’ academic performance by enhancing their physical and mental fitness. This is why most academic institutions strive to provide sports facilities on campus, acknowledging the fact that constant exercising gives balance to the habitual sedentary lives of students.
Being at the heart of Central London with the scarcity of free space, LSE is constrained to make judicious use of the sparse land available. In spite of this, the university has acknowledged the role of sports and body fitness in the lives of students and has created recreation centres of this purpose. Below is the list of fitness and sport facilities within the LSE campus or few minutes away:
- LSE Students’ Union Fitness Centre
This is located on the 4th floor of the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre and equipped with “a full range of gym facilities, with Olympic-standard strength performance equipment for both cardiovascular and resistance workouts – in addition to the extended free weights area.
- Gym and Badminton Court
Another gym and a badminton court can be found at the basement of the old building. This facility can be booked by clubs, societies and individual for games, trainings and rehearsals.
- Lincoln’s Inn Fields Netball and Tennis Courts
Although not a property of the university, LSE students can make use of the recreational facilities at Lincoln’s Inn Fields opposite the New Academic Building (NAB). There are standard tennis and netball courts available for booking.
- LSE Sportsground (Off Campus)
The LSE has off campus 23 acres of playing fields in New Malden, Surrey, about 30 minutes by train from Waterloo station, a walking distance from campus. Sporting facilities include seven football and two rugby pitches in the winter and two cricket squares and cricket nets. The facilities are available for LSE staff and students, but also available for hire by external users.
So, go out today and get registered in one of these facilities, your body and mind need it! As Jay Olshansky rightly observes, “exercise is roughly equivalent to an oil lube and a filter for a car. You don't have to do it, but when you do, it makes the car run a lot better”.
