Kristyn Manoukian

Director, Strategy and Development, Teach for Armenia

MSc Population and Development, 2014

Why did you choose LSE, and why did you choose your programme of study?

Recommendation, international student body, reputation, degree program

Overall, how do you look back on your LSE experience?

With nostalgia for the academic environment and gratitude for the wonderful network it allows me to build.

Please describe your career path to date:

Following LSE, I returned to my previous job (in my field of social policy related to education, but focused domestically) part-time, while I looked for a job in the international space. After 8 months, I took another domestically-focused education policy-related job. I had received 2 previous job offers that did not meet other criteria. After almost 2 years in that job, I wanted to return to the international space and took a 6-month internship with the UN in Armenia. Following the internship, I wanted more on-the-ground experience related to education in Armenia and I became the Director of Strategy and Development at Teach For Armenia.

Why did you choose your current job?

This job was education-related and internationally focused in a country where I had experience. It allows me to develop skills in the functional area that I am interested in and to be a part of an internationally-recognized global network (Teach For All) that provides even more opportunities and a clear path when I decide to leave Armenia.

Tell us about your current job:

I lead strategic planning, internal cross-functional projects, board relations and special initiatives in the organization. I am also responsible for the development (fundraising) strategy and for leading the multi-lateral, foundation and major gifts portfolios.

What advice do you have for LSE students who are looking to enter a similar profession to you?

Work abroad, do not be afraid to take an internship after you finish your degree (even if you really don't want to), take the time to find the position that suits your needs, find a balance between thinking long- and short-term, built and use your network, be patient, set goals, know your value-add and learn to negotiate.
