Power BI Workshop Series: Mastering Data Visualisations

The Power BI workshops are designed to provide you with the core topics and skills to create data visualisations with Power BI. These include extracting, transforming and loading (ETL) data, performing calculations using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), setting up filters and cross-filters, performing time-based analysis and forecasting, working with different data types, making a variety of visualisations.

This series of workshops is ideal for those with no prior experience or those looking for a refresher.

Each workshop is two hours long, and you will work with fellow learners, utilising your prior experience, web searches, and in-application Help features to find the solutions to real-world problems, with a Power BI expert on hand if you get stuck.

You can start at the level that is right for you by choosing which skill set you work on from the list below.

Workshops will take place in person throughout the year. The sessions will take place on campus in LRB.R.08 in the lower ground floor of the Library.

Power BI 1: ETL and Dashboards

Embark on your Power BI journey with a deep dive into the Power BI interface. Learn how to ETL (Extract Transform Load) data with ease. From navigating workspaces to importing data from various sources, you will gain hands-on experience with core data cleaning and shaping techniques. Create your first dashboard with ease using popular charts.

This task will give you a solid grasp of Power BI fundamentals and good practice in a concrete way, providing you with strong essentials to build on.

Power BI 2: Interactive Dashboards

In this task, you will build on your learnings from Power BI 1 and elevate your data storytelling by customizing visuals in Power BI. Explore advanced chart types and learn when to use them effectively. Harness the power of cross-highlighting and cross-filtering for interactive data exploration. Master the art of applying filters and slicers to enhance your visualisations.

This task will cover a broad base of fundamentals, allowing you to practice what you learned in Power BI 1, while providing you with the building blocks to learn more elaborate Power BI functionalities.

Power BI 3: Modelling and Hierarchies

Dive into the foundational principles of Star Schema design and build relationships between tables in PowerBI. Explore the intricacies of one-to-one and one-to-many relationships while creating hierarchical structures in your data model. Put your skills into practice with engaging visualisations exercises.

Power BI 4: Advanced Dashboards

Unlock the full potential of PowerBI with advanced visualisation techniques. Delve into drilldowns, bookmarks, and page navigation. Learn to create dynamic parameters for enhanced interactivity and get introduced to PowerBI Q&A with real-world visualization exercises.

Power BI 5: DAX, Time Series Analysis and Calculated Columns

Demystify DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) with an introduction to syntax and functions. Create measures and calculated columns, understanding their use cases. Explore time intelligence functions for insightful time-based analysis, implementing rolling averages, cumulative totals, and custom time periods.

Power BI 6: Advanced Data Analysis

Take your data analysis skills to the next level by handling outliers and anomalies in DAX. Implement dynamic grouping, scenario analysis, and sensitivity modelling using advanced DAX calculations. Learn strategies to optimize DAX in handling large datasets, ensuring top-notch performance.
