Dissertations

From proposal to submission, we're here to help!

Your dissertation gives you an opportunity to thoroughly explore a topic or research area that you are interested in.

Getting started with your dissertation can feel daunting- but the Learning Lab is here to help. From designing your proposal, to conducting your research, tackling your literature review and developing your argument, we have you covered.

Learning Lab Workshops

Throughout term time and the summer break, the Learning Lab has designed an extensive programme of workshops, covering a range of stages in the process, to support your writing.

Among other things, these workshops focus on:

  • Writing and developing your research proposal
  • Quantitative research support
  • Writing your literature review, abstract, and discussion section
  • Developing your introduction and conclusion
  • Creating a convincing and coherent argument

Learning Lab workshops are designed to be interactive, equipping you with practical skills that you can take away to apply directly to your own work.

One-to-one appointments

Our study advisers are here to answer any and all dissertation-related questions you might have.

Whether you are struggling to plan your time, having trouble refining your writing structure and voice, or just suffering with writer's block- we are here.

Our study advisers are experts on both qualitative and quantitative academic skills, so you can come with any question. They are also available throughout the summer break period, so they provide an excellent resource for you once Spring Term has ended.

 Writing retreats

As part of the Learning Lab workshop offering, we organise open writing retreats throughout the dissertation writing period.

These are sessions where you show up, switch off your phone, reflect on your goals… and get writing! Working in a room filled with other students all with the same motivation is an excellent way to make progress on your dissertation.

These sessions are available both on campus and online.
