What is a Learning Lab Study Advice session?
A Learning Lab Study Advice session is a 30-minute one-to-one conversation about any aspect of your studies at LSE. It's a chance to discuss any questions, concerns, or ideas you'd like to explore in relation to your learning journey with an experienced member of staff trained to provide academic advice and support. Students can also book a dedicated Quantitative Study Advice session with one of our Quantitative Study Advisers.
What might I use a Learning Lab Study Advice session for?
All sorts of things related to your learning. Here are some examples of what you can talk to us about:
- Read effectively and critically
- Manage your time and studies
- Perform, integrate and excel in your seminars
- Prepare for an essay
- Be analytical and critical in essay writing
- Develop research questions and prepare literature reviews
- Write up your dissertation
- Navigate further study
Quantitative Study Advice can help you:
- Build confidence with quantitative learning
- Approach statistics, maths, models or data
- Plan practice, revision or problem sets
- Understand feedback on quantitative work
- Communicate data-based findings clearly
- Talk through quantitative aspects of the dissertation
You can come with any question!
How does a Learning Lab Study Advice session work?
You book an appointment via the Student Hub - choose whether you want to meet on-campus or online - and turn up. We start by listening and understanding your particular concerns or questions. We can talk through some ideas or options, and help you plan next steps. Bring anything that's on your mind, including questions you haven’t yet fully formulated or ideas that feel somewhat scattered.
Appointments are available Monday - Friday, 10am - 6pm (London Time). We currently offer sessions online, via Microsoft Teams, and on campus in LSE LIFE Workspace 1 on the ground floor of the Library. We offer sessions throughout the academic year, including Spring Term and during the summer.
Learning Lab Study Advisers cannot proofread your work. They can talk with you about how you can learn to proofread your own work better, though!

Who will I be talking with?
Learning Lab Study Advice and Quantitative Study Advice sessions are offered by a member of a team of highly trained advisers. We've spent years teaching and supporting LSE students, and many of us studied here! We are all passionate and proficient in helping LSE students to learn better and to navigate their unique learning journeys according to their own strengths and priorities.
Do Learning Lab Study Advice sessions replace other one-to-one support around the School?
No.
The Learning Lab Study Advice sessions do not replace departmental office hours, rather they complement them.
They also do not replace service appointments offered by Disability and Mental Health Service (DMHS), but once again, enhance other forms of support you are getting. For all mental health and wellbeing related support, DMHS is the right place to get support.
For proofreading queries, the Centre for Language Studies offers a paid proofreading service, as do other service providers.
