Key information for new people managers

If you are a new people manager at LSE, welcome to your role. You play a key part in our community and this page covers some of the key information, resources for and expectations of you as you settle into your role.

You may be new to people management and new to LSE, or you've been at LSE for a while but have moved into your first people management role. Either way, this page has lots of useful links to support that will help you in your new role.

People management at LSE

Firstly, you'll want to attend our Flying Start People Manager event. This is a seperate session to our Flying Start induction event. The people manager event takes you through the School's expectations of you as a people manager and the main processes you'll need to include in your work. The session is in person on campus for two hours and can be booked on the training and development system. It is expected that all new people managers attend this session.

For longer-term support with developing your people management skills and tying that into organisational strategy, we offer the LSE Manager programme

Designed to support Professional Services Staff (PSS) to be as effective as possible in the people management part of their role. The programme is designed for all new PSS people managers who have either:

  • been promoted into a people management role at LSE for the first time or
  • been appointed externally to the School to a people management role.

There is an expectation that all new people managers will complete the programme.

Career Development Reviews

As part of your people management duties you are expected to support a Career Development Review or CDR for each of your team each academic year. At the end of each year, the documentation for each staff member must be uploaded to the HR system, where HR track completions. You can find more information about the CDR in our CDR Toolkit. You can also complete the Making the most of Career Development Reviews as an LSE people manager eLearning module, which can be found on the Astute Learning platform under self-enrol courses.

As part of the annual CDR process, you'll want to think about how you can support individual team members with opportunties for learning and growth, you'll also want to think about how to get the best out of your regular one-to-one meetings with your team members.

Our Career Development Toolkit is also a key support for your team in exploring options for career development and this is a resource you can both use and signpost your team to. You'll find the toolkit in the middle of our PS staff career development page

Setting your new team members up for success

If you are onboarding new staff, you'll want to set them up for success with a great induction. Our Manager's Induction Toolkit, gives you all the help you'll need to make this happen.

Outside of the LSE Manager programme mentioned above, we have a host of opportunities and support for your own development as a people manager.

Our Teams and Leadership Development Tool is for managers, leaders and teams to conduct anonymous 360 degree feedback, get a personalised, downloadable report and support with learning materials around areas highlighted for development. This invaluable tool can support both your growth and that of your team.

If you have been promoted to a management role within your team, our From Team Member to Manager eLearning can help support you with the transition. This module is part of a range of management and leadership focused eLearning available on our Astute Learning Platform. Other topics include developing your team through coaching, leadership styles to boost performance, fostering team cultures, leading with emotional intelligence and the secrets of skilled delegation.

We also have a range of programmes and courses to support your further career and leadership development. You can find a downloadable overview of all of this on the top right of this page.
