IT Ordering FAQ

Our Suppliers for academic year 2023/24

At LSE, we have partnered with industry-leading suppliers to provide high quality IT hardware solutions:

  • Dell for Windows devices

  • XMA for Apple devices

We have negotiated competitive prices and warranty coverage to ensure maximum value for the school. Staff can order hardware for School use directly from the punch-out portals, ensuring a seamless procurement experience.

I want to order an item, but it's not in stock

Please get in touch with the Hardware Asset Management (HAM) team via tech.support@lse.ac.uk and they will do their best to assist you or offer a suitable alternative.

I want a certain piece of equipment but there is a long lead time

Please get in touch with the Hardware Asset Management (HAM) team via tech.support@lse.ac.uk and they will do their best to assist you or offer a suitable alternative.

Can I return an asset that was ordered but not collected?

As we purchase on a commercial rather than a retail basis, we have fewer rights to return.  Once we have committed a PO, we have limited rights to return other than if the equipment is faulty or an error has been made by the supplier.

I want to order an item from a non-approved supplier. Can I do this?

No.  All IT procurement must be carried out with the approval of DTS.  Further information can be found in the IT End User Equipment Policy.

Please contact DTS via tech.suppor@lse.ac.uk and they will assist in finding the item you require from one of the School's approved suppliers.

Can I order an e-reader/notepad device other than an Apple iPad (i.e. Remarkable, Kindles)?

We are currently unable to purchase or offer support for e-reader and notepad devices such as Remarkable, Kindles, Boox etc. Unfortunately, these devices are not compatible with LSE’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems. These are the systems ensure that we adhere to a "Device Level Security Minimum Standard" and these can be found on this page: https://info.lse.ac.uk/staff/services/Policies-and-procedures

Regrettably, this means we are unable to offer a minimum level of security assurance in the following areas:

All Devices

1. Any mobile device including laptop, tablet, smart phone, external storage device, that’s used to store, access, process, share the LSE data must have full drive encryption applied.

2. A strong encryption key will be used for any encrypted volumes, enclosures or files. It must at least meet LSE’s Password Policy.

3. Keep the Operating System of the device up to date by installing security patches as soon as they are released.

4. If the Operating System can no longer be updated, the device must be replaced, and must not be used to store LSE data.

5. Keep other software up to data by implementing security patches as soon as they are released

The nearest alternative to these devices would be an iPad with a paper like screen protector. It is appreciated this is a more expensive option, but as indicated the Kindle devices are unable to meet all of the above minimum security requirements.

Can I order from Amazon/Curry's/Ebuyer/Apple Store/John Lewis etc and be reimbursed?

No.  All devices must be procured via suppliers who have been awarded contracts via competitive tender.

  • DELL for laptops, desktops, monitors and accessories

  • XMA for Apple devices and accessories

  • XMA for mobile phone handsets and tablets

I'm not in the UK. Can I purchase an item locally and be reimbursed?

No.  All orders must be delivered to the LSE campus or to an address within the UK  in the first instance, to ensure that they are correctly received into the School's financial and asset management system, and to ensure that they are correctly configured to meet the School's security and data policies, as well as being securely enrolled into the school's device management systems.

Can I have an item delivered internationally?

All orders must be delivered to the LSE campus or to an address within the UK in the first instance, to ensure that they are correctly received into the School's financial and asset management system, and to ensure that they are correctly configured to meet the School's security and data policies, as well as being securely enrolled into the school's device management systems.

What does "End-Of-Life" mean?

End-Of-Life, (EOL), is a term indicating a piece of equipment has reached the end of its "useful life". The device will no longer receive security, maintenance or software updates and warranty support would no longer be available, and the hardware (or it's components) would also no longer be available for repair and upgrade.
