This page is for LSE students. If you're a member of staff, please refer to the staff generative AI guidance.
AI tools can complement and support your learning, helping you to explore ideas, understand complex material, plan your work, or think through difficult concepts.
As an LSE student, you've got free access to two AI tools: Claude and Copilot. Both come with enterprise-level privacy protections, so your data stays private and isn't used to train the underlying models.
We encourage you to experiment with both tools and find what works for you. For example, you might use Claude to work through a research question, break down a complex reading, or explore a concept you're finding difficult. Copilot can help you summarise material, draft emails, or think through ideas via the Copilot Chat interface.
Before using either tool in your academic work, always check your department's guidance. You'll find this in your Moodle course under General Information. We've also linked to some onward policy and guidance resources further down this page.
Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic, available to you through LSE's Claude for Education partnership. It's useful for working through complex material, getting coding help, breaking down difficult concepts, and thinking through research questions.
How to get access:
You'll need to request access before you can use Claude. Once approved, you can use it through the web and mobile app. Request access to Claude.
Learning resources:
We have a range of resources to help you build confidence with Claude. We'd recommend starting with the AI Fluency course before diving in.
Microsoft Copilot Chat is available to all LSE students through your institutional account. You can use it to help with writing, summarising, researching, and thinking through ideas.
How to get access:
Sign in at copilot.microsoft.com with your LSE IT account. No separate registration needed. It works through Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome on both Windows and Mac.

Your data and privacy
For Claude, as part of LSE's agreement with Anthropic, your prompts and data are never used to train Claude's models, and the platform has enterprise-grade security controls in place. LSE's partnership with Anthropic runs through to 2027.
For Copilot, your LSE access uses Commercial Data Protection. This means Microsoft doesn't use your prompts or responses to train its AI models and data stays within the LSE Microsoft environment.
As with all cloud services (including Sharepoint or Google Drive), please be careful with what you upload. We encourage you to apply the 4D framework, which outlines how to use these tools responsibly.
