Claude for Education

LSE students and academic staff can request access to Claude by completing this form. 

If you already have a personal Anthropic account associated with your LSE email address, please complete the access form to switch to Claude for Education. LSE’s plan includes access to Claude 4, the latest and most intelligent model with more features and functionality than the free personal plan.

• Please email the Eden Centre with questions about Claude in relation to teaching, learning and assessment (pedagogy)
• Please email the IT Service desk with queries about how to access Claude.

By partnering with Anthropic, LSE is the only Higher Education institution in the UK to offer their students and academic staff free access to Claude. This initiative ensures equity by equipping students with essential tools and skills for success in an AI-transformed world, while advancing responsible AI deployment across higher education and society globally.

Claude for Education provides academic institutions with secure, reliable AI access for their entire community through an intuitive chat interface with enterprise-grade security and privacy controls. 

A key factor in LSE's decision to partner with Anthropic is their commitment to responsible use and AI safety. The company guarantees that no student or staff-submitted data will be used to train their models. The Claude for Education plan also includes a ‘learning mode’, which helps students develop critical thinking skills by providing answers that guide reasoning processes, rather than simply providing answers.

Please note the following guidance on using Claude safely and responsibly:

• Do not share any personal, operational, or sensitive data via Claude
• It is not currently possible to ‘lock down’ the instructions or knowledge content for projects, so please be aware when sharing that the project is editable by recipients. Anthropic are working to develop this functionality. 

Following discussions with LSE, Anthropic now offers users three distinct permission levels for sharing Claude projects:

Private

Only the project creator/owner can access the project. This option is ideal for work you wish to keep confidential and restrict to yourself alone.

Can edit

Users have complete modification rights to both project instructions and the knowledge base. This option facilitates true collaboration, enabling team members to jointly develop and refine project content.

Can view

Users can see and interact with the project, including accessing its knowledge base and following its instructions, but cannot modify any content. This permission level would be perfect for scenarios such as educators sharing content generated by Claude, without students being able to edit how it was created.


These flexible permission settings ensure that Claude projects can be shared appropriately across different use cases whilst maintaining proper control over access and editing rights.

Our initial partnership with Anthropic lasts for twelve months until May 2026.

• Licences for final year Undergraduates and 9 –10-month Postgraduate Taught students will be valid until the end of June 2025
• Licences for 12-month Postgraduate Taught students will be valid until mid-September 2025
• Incoming students will receive their licences from mid-September
• Licences for academic staff will be valid until May 2026

Claude Code is not a feature we currently have under our contract with Anthropic.

You can still use Claude to get help with your coding; it just needs to be done through the app or website rather than your terminal or IDE.
