If you have been awarded an LSE scholarship, this page explains how your award is managed during your studies.
LSE scholarships are awarded before students begin their studies. Current undergraduate students cannot apply for undergraduate scholarships after enrolment.
If you are looking for additional financial support during your studies, please vist our hardship funding pages.
The sections below provide answers to the most common questions about scholarships.
Receiving your scholarship
The way your scholarship is paid depends on the type of award you have received. You should refer to your scholarship offer letter for details of what your award includes.
Many scholarships consist of two elements:
- A tuition fee award
- A maintenance (or living costs) award
If your scholarship includes a tuition fee award, this amount is normally paid directly by LSE towards your tuition fees. You will not receive this part of the award in your bank account.
If your scholarship includes a maintenance award, this will be paid directly to you by bank transfer using the bank details you have provided in the Finance Hub.
To update your bank details, visit Finance Hub: https://lse.t1cloud.com/.
For security reasons you will be required to log in and authenticate using your LSE network account (@lse.ac.uk) credentials.
You will be prompted to enter:
- your bank account name (your name registered with the bank, e.g. James Smith)
- your bank name (HSBC, NatWest, etc.)
- bank sort code
- bank account number
You will only need to submit these details once and they will be stored in the Finance Hub for future payments. It can take up to 5 working days for bank details to be validated. Once your bank details have been validated you will be able to view them via the 'My details' tile in the Finance Hub.
Please note that we can only pay a UK bank account in GBP, we cannot pay an account from an overseas bank or in a different currency. You can only submit details of a bank account in your name; bank accounts in another name other than yours will not be validated.
Finance Hub is supported by the Finance Division rather than the Financial Support Office. If you have difficulties accessing the Finance Hub please use the Finance Division enquiry form
Maintenance payments will be paid at the start of each term. You can find more information on LSE term dates on this page.
You must have successfully completed registration (or re-registration for continuing students) at the start of the academic year to receive your payment.
When your scholarship payment has been made, you will receive an email confirming the payment.
You can also view your payment details in the Finance Hub by going to My Finance then Scholarships.
Once you receive the payment confirmation email, please allow 2–3 working days for the money to reach your bank account. If the payment has not arrived after this time, please contact the Financial Support Office.
The amount you receive in total will depend on the terms of your scholarship as set out in your scholarship offer letter.
If your scholarship has a maintenance award of less than £1,000 per academic year, you will be paid the full amount at the start of the Autumn Term.
Maintenance awards over £1,000 for the academic year will be split into termly instalments of 33% in the Autumn Term, 33% in the Winter Term and 34% in Spring Term.
Renewing your scholarship
Many scholarships continue beyond the first year of study, provided students continue to meet the conditions of their award. The specific renewal arrangements may vary between scholarships, so students should refer to their award letter for details of any conditions that apply.
In most cases, no. Scholarships are normally renewed automatically, and you do not need to submit a new application each academic year. If additional information is required to confirm your continued eligibility, the Financial Support Office will contact you.
You will be notified by email shortly before the start of the academic year that your scholarship has been renewed.
Specific renewal conditions vary between scholarships and students should always refer to their scholarship offer letter, but common renewal conditions include:
- Remaining registered on your programme
- Maintaining satisfactory academic progress
- Meeting any specific conditions outlined in your scholarship offer letter
Students who are unsure about the conditions of their award should refer to their scholarship documentation or contact the Financial Support Office.
If your circumstances change
If your circumstances change, you should contact the Financial Support Office as soon as possible so that we can advise you about any impact on your scholarship.
A change of programme may affect your scholarship entitlement depending on the terms of your award. If you are considering changing programme, please contact the Financial Support Office before making any decisions.
If you withdraw from your programme, future scholarship payments will normally stop. Any impact on previous payments will depend on the terms of your scholarship and the timing of your withdrawal. Please contact the Financial Support Office before making any decisions.
This depends on the terms of your scholarship and the circumstances of your interruption. Scholarship payments will be paused during an interruption and reviewed when you return to study.
Eligibility during a repeat year depends on the conditions of your scholarship. Some awards may continue, while others may be reviewed or cease. If you are repeating a year, you should contact the Financial Support Office for guidance.
Scholarships are normally awarded for a defined period and do not automatically extend if your studies continue beyond the original duration of the award. Requests for extensions are considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to the terms of the scholarship.
This depends on the terms of your scholarship.
Most scholarships are awarded for a specific programme and academic year and cannot automatically be transferred if you defer your studies. If you are considering deferring, you should contact the Financial Support Office as soon as possible to discuss how your scholarship may be affected.
In some cases, a scholarship may be deferred and reinstated when you begin or return to your studies. In other cases, the scholarship may end and you may need to be reassessed under the funding arrangements available at that time.
Any decision to defer a scholarship is considered on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed.
