About me

I am a sociologist with a specific interest in the economic sociology, sociology of markets and valuation studies. Having completed my PhD at LSE I became a Fellow with LSE100 in 2019. I have taught on The LSE100 Course for several years, covering modules such as Contemporary Markets, Democracy in Crisis, Food Insecurity, Causes of the Global Financial Crisis, Poverty, Climate Change, Copyright Law and the Internet and Nationalism.

My own research analyses the process of valuation within the contemporary diamond industry. Broadly, my research looks to understand the cultural, structural, and institutional factors that affect how value is formed and performed in the market. More specifically, my work offers the first sociological insight into the process of diamond (e)valuation with a view to better understanding the highly socialised valuation practices which determine a diamond’s quality, value, and price. My work focuses on certain ubiquitous instruments and devices of valuation within the diamond industry and suggests that the diamond classification system known as the “Four C’s” acts as a bridge between the supply and demand-sides of the market, providing consumers with the ability to distinguish and operationalise value, while allowing the sellers to demonstrate different classifications of value.

My current area of interest is in post-truth politics and the polarisation of Western political culture, looking specifically at the rise of the Qanon conspiracy theory during the Trump presidency in the USA and its international spread during the Covid 19 global pandemic.
