How student feedback and partnership is enhancing the LSE experience

You can contribute to change at LSE by sharing your views about your student experience, and by working in partnership with us.

Below, you can find out about some of the changes that have been shaped by your contributions and implemented to enhance your experience at LSE now – and for future generations of students.

Introducing education and assessment enhancements

Your feedback helps us to make better decisions about the changes needed to enhance your educational experience at LSE, with many programmes of work either completed or underway to support your studies. We have:

  • Introduced one of the biggest e-exam rollouts in the UK, with more than 11,000 e-Exams sessions taking place in 2023/24. This is up from 6,500 sittings (2,900 students), across 135 exams and 8 departments, in the 2022/23 summer exam period.
  • Started a comprehensive review of the School's assessment regulations – directly addressing queries and concerns shared by previous cohorts of students.
  • Centralised deferrals to make the process fairer, quicker and simpler.
  • Made Moodle improvements for many of the courses you take, including:

    1. Added a course index so you can navigate through your course Moodle pages more quickly

    2. Introduced the ability to personalise your Moodle dashboard

    3. Added a timeline to the dashboard so you can see what submissions you have coming up

    4. Some departments now provide direct access to available grades from the homepage

    5. and, ensured marking criteria and guidance on AI use are available on every Moodle page.

We've also taken steps to improve course selection and timetabling, with a new Curriculum Management system now in the early stages of deployment.

Improving student mental health and wellbeing support

We know from your feedback that supporting your wellbeing is important to help you do your best at LSE. With your input, we:

  • Have made it easier to navigate the Student Wellbeing Service
  • Increased the number of wellbeing advisers and counsellors
  • Have extended our 24/7 mental health support through our partnership with Spectrum.Life
  • Have introduced a self-service booking system to make it easier for you to book an appointment with the Student Wellbeing Service when you need one. The first phase is live and you can book an appointment directly with a Student Wellbeing Adviser or a Disability and Mental Health Service (DMHS) Adviser
  • Are continuing to introduce Senior Student Advisers in departments to support your wellbeing, acting as a bridge between your department and central support services
  • Launching a new Student Academic Mentoring programme to provide support to neurodivergent students
  • Have increased wellbeing workshops and activities to support you during different times of the year. Topics include "How to beat exam stress" and "Productive procrastination"

Enhancing extra-curricular opportunities

Outside the classroom, there are lots of ways we are making changes to positively impact your overall LSE experience, including:

  • Improving the Welcome experience
  • Hosting more social events and activities both in departments and at School level
  • Launched a new Skills & Opportunities webpage to give you access a wide range of events, skills training, workshops and opportunities all in one place
  • Making it easier for you to benefit from the expertise and experience of LSE alumni through Ask an Alum, an AI-powered tool
  • Providing you with additional ways to get work experience during your studies with our micro-internships programme
  • Providing civic engagement opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students through our partnership with CIVICA, an alliance of European universities.

Improving our partnership and feedback mechanisms

Your input is crucial to making a difference to the LSE student experience, which is why we’re continuing to make improvements to how we work in partnership with you and ask for your feedback. We have:

  • Made enhancements to Staff-Student Liaison Committees (SSLCs) and Consultative Fora, in collaboration with the LSE Students’ Union
  • Introduced the Student Education Panel, giving you the opportunity to discuss and shape education enhancements
  • Improved the Change Makers programme, to maximise the impact of your research projects.

Improving our campus and our community

Our campus has undergone huge changes in recent years from the most recent addition of the Marshall Building – which added department and teaching spaces as well as 400+ more study spaces – to introducing more cafes and eateries, to the ongoing work to make our campus sustainable and pedestrian friendly.

All of this has been done with our students' needs and views at the forefront.

  • Take a look at this latest report which looks at a long term study of the role of students views in our changing estate and the impact on the student experiences across the past 13 years.
