Cause for Concern

This page offers information for LSE students, staff and third parties who may be concerned about an LSE student. 

If you are concerned about a student’s wellbeing or safety, please complete the Cause for Concern form to inform the Student Wellbeing Service, providing as much information as you can.

Is it a general support query?

Examples

  • Homesickness, isolation, lonliness, relationship difficulties, bereavement, deadline anxieties/stress
  • Reasonable adjustments for diagnosed conditions
  • Health, wellbeing or behaviour that impacts academic work
  • Advice on things such as accommodation, visas or financial support

Actions

  1. Meet to talk with student, offer departmental support i.e. Departmental Senior Student Advisers, Academic Mentors, wellbeing leads etc.
  2. Signpost to the relevant LSE service
  3. Send student resources links available from the 24/7 support webpage

Is it a Cause for Concern?

Worried about an LSE Student? Report a Cause for Concern

If you are concerned about a student's wellbeing or safety, please complete the Cause for Concern Form to inform the Student Wellbeing Service, providing as much information as you can.  

Haven't heard from the student?

If you are submitting a Cause for Concern Form because you haven’t been able to reach a student: 

  1. Have you tried calling the student? 
  2. Have you used their second email address? 
  3. Have you given the student at least 24 hours to respond? 

Cause for Concern Examples

  • Suicidal thoughts and/or self-harm
  • Changes or concerns around mental wellbeing (e.g. neglect, appearing distressed, withdrawn, a lack of engagement despite attempts to contact etc.)
  • Substance misuse, eating disorders
  • Recent sexual violence, harassment or bullying whilst at LSE

Actions

  1. Complete a Cause for Concern Form (the link can be found at the bottom of this page)
  2. Send student relevant resources for support which can be found in the Cause for Concern Brochure
  3. Advise GP contact or registration
  4. Direct student to DMHS drop-in service if needed

What we will do when we receive a Cause for Concern Form

Depending on the concerns raised, we may do one or more of the following: 

  • Contact the student and offer support. We ordinarily rely on the student choosing to engage with support. 
  • Contact the person who submitted the form to discuss their concerns and offer advice on how they can support the student. 
  • Liaise with other support services within or outside of LSE who may already be supporting the student. 
  • Liaise with appropriate members of the student’s personal support networks to help ensure the student receives support from those who are closest to them. 
  • Support the student to access appropriate external services such as a GP, local crisis services or psychological and psychiatric services. 

We will confirm that we’ve received your request and will follow-up with the student as appropriate. Depending on the circumstances, we may not be in a position to share any further information with you. However, if your concerns persist, please contact us again via email at disability-wellbeing@lse.ac.uk.  

In other cases, we may establish ongoing communication with you in order to jointly support the student and help keep them safe and well.  

Is it an emergency or crisis situation?

Examples

  • Immediate plans to end life
  • Any immediate and significant risk to/from the students or others
  • Urgent medical attention is needed (physical or mental health)
  • Seeming out of touch with reality or having hallucinations with immediate concern to safety

  1. Call 999
  2. Inform LSE Security (if the situation is happening on campus)

Afterwards

Please complete a Cause for Concern form to DMHS as soon as possible. Inform your manager to discuss any further actions.

  • LSE Cause for Concern Form
    This form, Student Wellbeing email accounts and phone numbers are monitored between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Within these hours, we aim to respond to any concerns as soon as possible within two working days. The form is not monitored during weekends, bank holidays and School closure periods.

Staff wellbeing

LSE Staff can see details on school resources to help with their own wellbeing, and can contact the 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme by calling 0800 107 6147. 

LSE’s Staff Counselling Service offers a confidential space where any member of staff can talk about issues that may be causing concern - email staff.counselling@lse.ac.uk
