Green Impact

We have the longest running Green Impact programme in the world!

Green Impact has given me the chance to work on a variety of tasks that promote sustainability across our workplace and inspire others — an honour recognised with my Sustainability Hero award.

2025-26 Green Impact is now live!

Email Sustainability Engagement Officer, Beatrice Clementel (b.clementel@lse.ac.uk), to find out more and get involved.

What is Green Impact?

It is LSE's sustainability engagement programme, coordinated by the Sustainability Team and Students Organising for Sustainability charity. Green Impact focuses on practical actions, meaningful change, as well as staff and student collaboration.

Why get involved?

Gives you a blueprint of actions on how to reduce environmental impact and raise awareness in areas like waste, water, biodiversity etc.

Offers opportunities to learn more about sustainability and how to encourage positive behaviour change.

Offers recognition: LSE-wide acknowledgement via official award ceremony, which can raise the profile of departments (Bronze / Silver etc.).

Builds professional reputation: being seen as someone who leads on sustainability is valued (Sustainability Hero Award) and can be good for career development.

Enhances morale, wellbeing, sense of pride: doing something meaningful, seeing tangible results, being part of wider positive change.

How does it work?

Green Impact staff teams complete actions from a digital toolkit. There's various actions that award you points on a scale from 2-8, from organising a book swap to hosting a hedgehog awareness week event and you can even make up your own!

At the end of the year, teams submit their toolkits and LSE students are invited to audit staff teams and confirm their final points. After a review, the team will be awarded a category (Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze) depending on their final points and will be invited to the Celebration of Sustainability in summer to be given their award!

How can I take part?

If you are a staff member, ask your Department, Division, Institute, or Residence if they have an active Green Impact team you can join. If there's not an existing team, then ask around to see whose interested!

If you are a student, we recruit student auditors every year and if you join for the day, you will gain a reference for your CV, a LinkedIn badge and free lunch!
