Change of circumstances

Changes to your registration or study arrangements may affect your funding, including your stipend payments, funding end date and continued eligibility. If you are considering an interruption, withdrawal, programme change or extension to your studies, you should review the guidance below and contact the Financial Support Office as early as possible. We can explain how the proposed change may affect your funding and whether any action is required before the change is approved.

Interrupting your studies

Studentships are intended to be held on a continuous basis. Students may need to interrupt studies, for example, due to health reasons, or to take up a temporary, short term job opportunity (which can be justified if it is highly relevant to your research). Interruption requests on the grounds of financial hardship will not be considered.

Please contact the Financial Support Office and the PhD Academy to discuss.

Extending your submission deadline

If you wish to extend your submission deadline you will need to submit a request from LSE via the PhD Academy no later than 6 months prior to your current submission deadline.

Mode of attendance

For any changes between full-time and part-time study, please contact the Financial Support Office and the PhD Academy.

Withdrawing from your programme

If you withdraw from your programme, your funding will normally end and no further payments will be made. The impact on any payments already made will depend on the terms of your award and the timing of your withdrawal.

If you are considering withdrawing, please contact the Financial Support Office for advice on how this may affect your funding

What happens if I submit my thesis early?

If you submit your thesis more than six weeks before your submission deadline, you will no longer be enrolled and your stipend will end at the point of submission.

If you have already received a stipend payment covering the period after your early thesis submission date, you will be asked to make a repayment of funding paid for the period after thesis submission.
