What to bring to enrolment

When you campus enrol we need to check that you have valid permission to study at LSE.

Please bring your offer letter, enrolment pass, and the following documents (depending on which category you fall under).

Students from the UK

A driving licence does not verify nationality and is therefore not sufficient for campus enrolment purposes.

  • UK citizens who hold an in-date UK passport must bring this to campus enrolment as it is essential to present this document to complete your enrolment.
This must be your original passport. We cannot accept electronic or hard copies of passports at campus enrolment.
  • If you hold a UK passport but this has expired, you must bring the original expired passport plus two additional documents. The additional documents will need to be the same combination of documents as required for a DBS application.

Students from EU/EAA countries

From 1st July 2021, LSE is required to check the status of EU/EEA nationals. EU/EEA nationals and their dependents may hold one of the following statuses:

  • EU Settlement Scheme: pre-settled status
  • EU Settlement Scheme: settled status
  • EU Settlement Scheme: family member
  • Student visa
  • Student dependant visa

Further details will be available in due course as many of these routes only provide a digital status.  It is therefore vital that you read and understand what your options are.

Documents to bring if you hold EU Settlement Scheme Pre-settled or EU Settlement Scheme Settled status or a Student Route Visa (digital)

EU Settlement Scheme Pre-settled Status

  • Valid in-date original passport
  • Share Code or Printed copy of PDF confirmation of status
  • Original letter or email from Home Office that you first received when pre-settled status was granted.

EU Settlement Scheme Settled Status

  • Valid in-date original passport
  • Share Code or printed copy of PDF confirmation of status

Student Route Visa

  • Valid in-date original passport
  • Share Code or printed copy of PDF confirmation of status
  • Printed copy of email from Home Office confirming your entry clearance and detailing LSE as your place of study
  • Boarding Pass (to confirm date of arrival in UK)

If you are a visiting student from an EU/EEA country, you will need to bring your passport and boarding pass if you have entered through the e-gates.

You can find more information on the following web page:

Advice for EU/EEA Students

If you require a Student visa to join LSE, you must apply for and obtain this before campus enrolment.  If you enter the UK as a tourist without having applied for your visa/with your visa application still in progress, you will not be able to enrol or attend teaching until your visa is in place. Contact The Student Advice and Engagement Team for advice if you have any concerns.

For those with pre-settled or settled status, please ensure that you generate a share code so that we can verify your immigration status. We will ask for this share code on the day of your enrolment. The share code is valid for a limited time only-normally 30 days- and therefore it is best to generate this close to your enrolment date. You can generate your share using this link.

Students Visas

  •  Your current passport
Please note that your passport must be the original document. We cannot accept electronic or hard copies of your passport for campus enrolment.
  • Your entry clearance sticker (where applicable)
  • Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • Your UKVI decision letter/email confirming your Student visa has been granted - this will have been included in the envelope when your passport was returned.
  • EU/EEA nationals only: a print out of your PDF digital status (where applicable)

Your BRP will show the LSE sponsor licence number and should be valid for the full length of your programme.

You must attempt to collect your BRP before coming to campus enrol. However, if the post office do not have your BRP then we can temporarily enrol you without it, providing you can show us the decision letter from the UKVI confirming the full period of leave.  You will then need to enrol again once your BRP arrives.

If you are required to quarantine, please follow the advice on this web page before attempting to collect your BRP:

COVID 19 immigration advice for students

If you have previously studied in the UK on a Tier 4/Student visa at another institution and plan to extend your visa in the UK, you will need to provide evidence that you have applied for your visa using your LSE CAS before you will be permitted to campus enrol.

If you have just completed a previous programme at LSE, you will need to apply to extend your stay in the UK within 6 weeks of campus enrolling for your new programme or before the end date of your current visa, whichever is sooner.

Students who enter the UK via the e-Gates

The following nationalities are usually able to use the e-Gates at the UK border:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • USA
  • EU/EEA nationals

If you are an e-Gate national, your passport will not be stamped upon entry to the UK.  Please print either a copy of your boarding card or your flight details as evidence of your arrival date in the UK. You will need to bring a hard copy of either of these documents to show staff at campus enrolment.

If you enter the UK when your Student visa is valid, then your visa will be activated simply by going through the e-Gates or speaking to a Border Force Officer.

If you enter the UK before the start date of Student visa, you will only be entering the UK as a tourist and you will be unable to campus enrol for your programme.  You will need to leave and re-enter the UK on your Student visa after its start date in order to activate it. It is not possible to automatically switch from being a visitor to a Student visa from within the UK. You do not need to travel home to do this, you can travel to Europe (but not the Republic of Ireland). However, you must re-enter the UK when your Student visa is valid and quarantine again if required.
