IRDAP enabled postgraduate courses

Reassessments in August

IRDAP enabled postgraduate courses have re-assessments in August.

Some postgraduate courses are 'IRDAP enabled'. Reassessments for these courses take place during the In-Year Resit and Deferral Period in August (rather than in RDAP1 during January). If you need to take a further reassessment you will do so when the assessment normally runs during the following academic year (rather than in RDAP2 during May/June). This reassessment pattern may also mean that you are awarded your degree at a different time.

  • The in-year resit and deferral period takes place during August. For exact dates of when in-person exams will take place visit exam timetable. For dates related to any other assessments please contact the department responsible for teaching the course.
  • Visit IRDAP enabled PG courses for the full list of courses that are moving to this new pattern. All other courses continue to follow the Postgraduate Resit and Deferral Periods (RDAP) pattern with reassessments in January and May/June.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reassessment?

You will need to complete reassessments in two scenarios:

  • You have deferred an assessment.
  • You have failed a course overall, have not been awarded and have attempts remaining in the course/assessment.

What about RDAP1 and RDAP2

All other postgraduate courses have reassessments in January (RDAP1) and May/June (RDAP2).

There will be no reassessments for IRDAP enabled courses during the normal Postgraduate Resit and Deferral Periods in January and May/June.

What if I don't pass in IRDAP?

If you do not pass your course in IRDAP (and are not awarded) then you will take the reassessment during the following the academic year. Reasons for not passing are  because you've deferred or because you've failed the course overall.

For example, if you defer a reassessment that you were due to complete during IRDAP then you will be expected to take that assessment when it normally runs during the following academic year. If it is an exam which normally runs during January then you will take it in January. If it is an exam which normally runs during May/June then you will take it during May/June. Coursework and other assessments will need to be submitted at the same time as students who are having teaching on that course.

Remember that your assessment will take place during the academic year and thus will be ratified only at the end of the academic year, in July. This means that if, for example, you take a January exam whilst you'll get a provisional mark in Winter Term you won't get the final result (and thus can't be awarded) until July. So, even if your programme has an RDAP1 award point in March you can't be awarded because the results for this course will not have been ratified.

When will I get my results?

Results for assessments and reassessments taken during the academic year are released in July.

Results for PG reassessments taken during IRDAP are released in October.

For the exact dates visit Publication of Results.

What if I have a mix of IRDAP enabled and standard courses?

When you take your reassessment is dependant on the course, not your programme. This means you may follow two patterns simultaneously.

For example, if you need to complete reassessments in both EC411 and GY426 you will take the assessments for EC411 according to the IRDAP pattern, and GY426 according to the RDAP1/RDAP2 pattern.

If you're on a 9 or 10 month programme you will complete your IRDAP assessments after receiving your results in July.

If you're on a 12 month programme then the IRDAP assessments will fall before you receive your results in November. Visit IRDAP enabled postgraduate courses and 12 month programmes for more details of how this will work.

For more information about how the two patterns interact check out the scenarios at the bottom of this page.

When will I be awarded?

Your award point depend on both your programme and the courses when you do reassessments.

  • If you are on a 9 or 10 month Economics programme (i.e. a programme in the Department of Economics that normally ends in June) then your award points will be in July and September (following IRDAP). These programmes do not have an award point in March (following RDAP1). The next award point would be the following July (at the end of the next academic year)
  • If you are on a 9 or 10 month programme in a department other than Economics (e.g. Finance that normally ends in June) then your normal award points will be in July and March* (following RDAP1). However, if you complete all your reassessments after IRDAP (because you just needed to complete an IRDAP enabled reassessment) then you can exceptionally be awarded in September (following IRDAP). After March* the next award point would be July (following RDAP2).
  • If you are on a 12 month programme then your award points will be November and March* (following RDAP1). The next award point would be July (following RDAP2).

* If you're taking a re-assessment for an IRDAP enabled course during the academic year (for example having deferred out of IRDAP) then this course will not be ratified until July, this means you cannot be awarded in March (after RDAP). This applies for all assessments including Autumn Term course work and January exams.

How does this interact with the compensation rules?

The postgraduate schemes of award include the concept of compensation. In short, these allow you compensate for a fail (but not a bad fail) in one course with marks from other courses.

These rules are not altered by IRDAP enabled assessments. However, the timing of IRDAP reassessments does have some implications for 12 month students. Visit IRDAP enabled postgraduate courses and 12 month programmes for full details of how this will work.

What about Exceptional Circumstances?

If you are taking an IRDAP enabled PG course and need submit Exceptional Circumstances then it is important that you do so by the spring term deadline.
