In the late Autumn Term and late Winter Term we send you an email asking you to verify that we have your name stored correctly in the student records system and to check that we have entered you for the correct assessments.
To help you check that you're entered for the correct assessments we include a table showing the assessments that have been set up in the student records system. However, there are legitimate reasons why the table may not display some assessments that you are taking or it may show some assessments you were not expecting. This page is designed to help explain these situations and explain what to do if there is definitely and error.
What to do if there is definitely an error in your assessment entries.
If, after reading the sections below, you believe the table is incorrect then please submit a query to the Student Services Centre (select Exams and other assessments then Assessment entry) and explain the issue. When we receive your query we will check your records to clarify, and update as necessary. Please do get in touch as soon as you can, and before your next assessment. If you don't get in touch then it could lead to issues when your results are published at the end of the year.
What is shown in the table?
The table has a row for every course where you have assessments this year and where the Student Services Centre has not yet processed your marks.
The left hand column shows the course code. The middle column shows the course title in bold, under this is a list of the assessments you are taking in that course along with each assessment's weighting.
The right hand column notes whether the assessments in a given course are reassessments or not.
- If the right hand column shows "Yes" it means that you're taking re-assessments in this course. This means that you are being assessed after having failed the course previously or after having deferred the course previously.
- If the right hand column shows "No" it means that you've been entered for assessments in this course for the first time. This means that you're taking the assessments either alongside or immediately after the teaching. It will also show "No" if you're having repeat teaching.
Why some courses might be missing from the table
The table will not show a course if the Student Services Centre has recieved and processed all the marks for that course. For example if the course only has a January exam and that mark has been processed then it will not appear when we sent the email in March.
Why some assessments might be missing from the table
Expand the relevant section below to check why some assessments might be missing from the table.
- The table will not show any assessments which have already been deferred to IRDAP. If you've deferred all assessments within a course to IRDAP (e.g. there was only one exam and you've deferred it or there were two essays and you've deferred them both) then just the course title will show with no assessments underneath.
- The table does not show assessments where the mark has already been submitted to and processed by the Student Services Centre. So, if the teaching department has already marked your work and those marks have been processed by the Student Services Centre then that assessment will not appear. The system knows that you've completed this assessment. This means that the Winter Term email will not show assessments where you got provisional marks in February.
- The table does not show assessments that you're due to take during IRDAP, it only shows assessments you're taking within the academic year itself. For example, if you were absent from a January exam and know that you need to resit it during IRDAP, this won't show in this table. We send a separate message to confirm IRDAP entries after July results have been published.
- Any assessments with marks banked from previous years will not appear. The system knows you don't need to retake these assessments.
If you are taking assessments in RDAP1 or RDAP2 please check the sections below.
- The table will not show any assessments which have already been deferred to IRDAP in August or RDAP1 in January. If you've deferred all assessments within a course (e.g. there was only one exam and you've deferred it or there were two essays and you've deferred them both) then just the course title will show with no assessments underneath.
- For IRDAP enabled postgraduate courses; the table does not show assessments that you're due to take during IRDAP, it only shows assessments you're taking within the academic year itself. For example, if you were absent from a January exam and know that you need to resit it during IRDAP, this won't show in this table. We send a separate message to confirm IRDAP entries after July results have been published.
- Any assessments with marks banked from previous years will not appear. The system knows you don't need to retake these assessments.
- The table will show assessments which you've deferred from RDAP1 to RDAP2. These periods are both in the same academic year so whilst the RDAP1 assessment doesn't appear anymore it has been replaced by the RDAP2 assessment.
- Any assessments with marks banked from previous years will not appear. The system knows you don't need to retake these assessments.
- The table will not show any assessments which have already been deferred from RDAP2 to RDAP1 next year. These are not taking place in the current academic year so are not shown. If you've deferred all assessments within a course from RDAP2 to RDAP1 next year (e.g. there was only one exam and you've deferred it already or there were two essays and you've deferred them both) then just the course title will show with no assessments underneath.
- The table does not show assessments that you're due to take during RDAP1 next year, it only shows assessments you're taking during the current academic year. So, if you were absent from an exam in May/June and know that you need to resit it during RDAP1 next year, this won't show in this table. We send a separate message to confirm RDAP1 entries in Autumn Term.
- Any assessments with marks banked from previous years will not appear. The system knows you don't need to retake these assessments.
Why assessments you've completed may still show
This is perfectly normal and happens because the email is snapshot in time. The assessment will be showing either because the mark has not yet been submitted to the Student Services Centre or has not yet been processed. You do not need to worry about this - the email shows assessments that you are due to take but it will also show those that you've taken but which have not yet been processed in the student records system. The system doesn't yet know that you've completed this assessment but you can be assured that marking and processing is happening.
Other assessments that you have completed may not show because the mark has been processed. In this instance the sytem knows that you've completed the assessment so it doesn't add it to the table.
Why a deferred assessment may still show
If you've deferred from RDAP1 to RDAP2 the table will show the RDAP2 assessments. These periods are both in the same academic year so whilst the RDAP1 assessment doesn't appear anymore it has been replaced by the RDAP2 assessment.
If an assessment where you've got a confirmed deferral in place appears in any other circumstance this is incorrect. Please submit a query to the Student Services Centre (select Exams and other assessments then Assessment entry) and explain the issue so that we can investigate.
0% assessments for General Course, incoming Erasmus and incoming GO LSE students
For General Course, incoming Erasmus and incoming GO LSE students there will also be a class assessment with a 0% weighting listed for most courses. This is your class grade, a summary letter grade obtained from your class teacher at the end of the coure. Class teachers award class grades based on attendance, class participation (engagement and quality), presentations and marks received for essays and/or problem sets.
If your class teacher has already submitted your class grade for a course then this assessment may not show.
What if my name is incorrect?
If your name is incorrect, you must come to the Student Services Centre so that we can update it. You will need to come in person and show us your Passport, Deed Poll or Marriage Certificate for us to make changes to your name. Please check that the spelling and punctuation of your name are correct and be aware that this is how your name will appear on your certificate and transcript.
