Frequently Asked Questions

Does an interruption of study count towards my maximum period of registration?

Yes, an interruption of study will count towards your maximum period of registration because you are still registered at the School during that time.  For example, a 12 month Masters student who takes an interruption of study and then needs further time after the end of the academic year they return, will need an extension of their maximum period of registration.

Does Repeat Teaching extend the length of my degree, giving me a longer maximum period of registration.

Adding repeat teaching does not extend the initial length of your degree programme. Therefore, if you are on a three year degree, have a year of Repeat Teaching and then need to take an interruption of studies, you will need to extend your maximum period of registration to complete your studies.

I have added a work placement or study abroad exchange to my degree. Does this change my maximum period of registration?

If you add a work placement or study abroad year to your undergraduate degree, your length of programme will change and as such you will receive an additional year of registration at the School.

Does having a change of circumstance approved automatically guarantee an extension of my maximum period of registration?

The following change of circumstances do not guarantee an extension to your maximum period of registration :

  • Deferrals
  • Resits
  • Repeat Teaching
  • Interruption of studies

If you will exceed your maximum period of registration following one of these changes, you will need to seek an extension.

How can I get an extension on my maximum period of registration?

It is at your department's discretion whether you can receive an extension of your maximum period of registration depending on your academic progress and your engagement with your studies.  It also within their right to set conditions such as the length of your extension and whether any further extensions will be permitted.

The Student Advice and Engagement Team will liaise with your department once it has been noted that you will need an extension to your maximum period of registration. If your department confirm that they are willing to extend your maximum period of registration, the length of the extension and any conditions will need final approval from the Deputy Head of Student Services (Advice and Policy).  You will then be contacted by the Student Advice and Engagement Team with the outcome and you will need to agree to the conditions.

If your department rejects your request, the Student Advice and Engagement Team will contact you with details why your request for an extension has been rejected.

If you do not agree to the conditions or your department rejects your request for an extension to the maximum period of registration, you will have 10 working days to appeal the decision by responding to the email from the Student Advice and Engagement Team.
