What's next?

Regular review of assessment at course, programme and Department level helps to ensure that students are receiving fair, consistent and evidence-informed assessment that supports their learning progression and maintains academic standards.

Assessment can be systematically evaluated using a variety of data sources, including student performance and progression data, feedback from students and benchmarking to ensure that assessments reflect current needs. Engagement with academic development workshops and best practice sharing events can provide opportunities to explore innovative approaches and lessons learnt.

Working in collaboration with students – be that via piloting new assessments or co-creating assessment briefs, rubrics and marking criteria – can help to develop shared understanding of the experiences of assessment and make assessments more meaningful.

If you are interested in finding out more or discussing possible changes to assessment on your programmes or individual courses, there are a number of helpful contacts around the LSE who can provide guidance and support.

  • The Eden Centre’s Departmental Advisers can be consulted on all aspects of assessment including assessment choice in programme and course design, the relationship between formative and summative assessment, and mapping assessment across a programme. You may also wish to explore Eden’s Funding sections. Their Digital Education team also support staff in the use of technologies to enhance assessment and with the introduction of e-assessment and e-feedback.

  • The Teaching Quality Assurance and Review Office (TQARO) can help ensure that assessment practice is aligned to the School's academic standards and quality assurance mechanisms through the Code of Good Practice

  • The LSE Planning Division is responsible for creating and maintaining a variety of data visualisations on Tableau Server to support decision making around assessment at a programme level.

  • LSE Student Services can provide advice when you are designing, or considering making changes to, your assessment method on relevant processes and regulations. If you are considering regulatory questions around areas such as External Examination, Academic Misconduct or any other regulatory question, please contact SSC.Appeals@lse.ac.uk. If you would like information about the implementation of Individual Exam Arrangements or Alternative Assessments as a reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act 2010 please contact exams@lse.ac.uk.

  • The Disability and Mental Health Service can provide guidance on a range of topics relating to disabled students and relevant School processes, including My Adjustments.

  • LSE Learning Lab can offer a myriad of resources to support students when preparing for various assessment methods. On their event page, students can sign up for a wide range of workshops that may link to specific assessments (for example: presentation skills). The workshops can be filtered by skillset to see what Learning Lab offers, and you can encourage your students to attend those that will best support them. Alternatively at Learning Lab’s Moodle page, both you and students can find self-study resources as well as slides, handouts, and other materials from workshops that they have held on specific assessments and/or the skills related to those assessment methods.  Finally, Learning Lab meets with course convenors to discuss the specific needs of students to meet the assessment provision in order to deliver a bespoke, course specific workshop.  Email them at Learninglab@lse.ac.uk for more information.
