The Marshall Building opened its doors to all new building occupants and users on 4 January 2022.
The School has invested £145m in this building, to improve the student and staff experience and the LSE campus environment. The opening of the building is a clear demonstration of our ambition to create a world class estate and a university quarter.
We welcome the support of donors in helping us to fulfil the vision set out and initiated by Paul Marshall’s transformational gift towards the building in 2015.
The Marshall Building is a seminal new addition to LSE’s campus. Designed by Dublin-based Grafton Architects, the large, multi-purpose building occupies a pivotal position at the southern corner of Lincoln’s Inn Fields and embeds LSE’s presence in one of London’s most iconic garden squares.
The building is home to the following departments and facilities:
- Department of Management
- Department of Accounting
- Department of Finance
- Financial Markets Group
- Systemic Risk Centre
- The Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship
- Teaching and learning
- Sports Centre with multipurpose sports hall, squash courts and dynamic weights room
- Arts rehearsal facilities and music practice rooms
- Support and ancillary services
In line with good practice, the design and operation of MAR has been subject to a formal Post Occupancy Evaluation.
LSE Estates commissioned an independent Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of MAR from the perspective of building users. This was conducted in two parts: in November to December 2022, research with a cross-section of the building’s ‘end-users’ – students, academics, and professional services staff; and in February 2023, research with representatives of the key teams who run the building and its services. The POE was undertaken by specialised building use researchers: ZZA Responsive User Environments.Occupants and users were asked for feedback. The results of the POE are detailed here.
