Your provisional marks

Interpreting the information

 For students due to receive final results on 18 July 2025

Marks and grades in the provisional marks screen have not been confirmed by the relevant Exam Boards and thus may change.

You can access provisional marks in Student LfY. Head to the My assessments section and then the Provisional marks tab. You can view results on a computer, tablet or mobile device.

The information on the screen should be self-explanatory but you can expand the sections below for information to help you understand what the numbers, letters and symbols on the provisional marks screen mean.

Please remember that the marks and grades shown on the provisional marks screen are subject to change. We share provisional marks to allow you to prepare for your next steps, either at LSE or elsewhere. However, sharing marks early means they have not yet been ratified by the relevant exam boards and can therefore change. The information displayed on the provisional marks screen is not an official record and should not be shared, provisional marks are for your reference only.

BA, BSc and LLB programmes

When will you receive your provisional marks?

Students following BA, BSc and LLB programmes will be able to access their provisional marks in Student LfY on 11 July 2025.

We release provisional marks so that, if necessary, you have as much time as possible to prepare for the in-year resit and deferral period (IRDAP) which begins on Monday 18 August 2025.

How do I see provisional marks for individual assessments?

If you are using a larger screen you can access provisional individual assessment marks by clicking the 'Show Assessments' button to the right hand side. You can hide assessment level marks in the same way. On a mobile device the button appears as a down / up chevron.

Overall Marks and Grades

Where we have a full set of marks available, there will also be an overall mark and and overall grade available. You can interpret the grades using the list below:

1 = First class
2A = Upper Second class
2B = Lower Second class
3 = Third
Fail = Fail

Deferred assessments

If you have deferred an assessment then it will show with a status of Deferred. The overall grade for the course will also show with no overall mark, and an overall grade of Deferred. Visit  when will I take my deferred assessment to find out when you will sit deferred assessments.

Absences

If you were absent from an assessment then it will show with a status of Absent. The overall mark for the course will be set at zero. If you were absent from all the assessments in the course it will show with a grade of Absent. If you were absent from at least one component of assessment but have completed others the course will have a grade of Incomplete.

Missing Results

If an assessment is not showing that means that the Student Services Centre have not yet received the mark for that assessment. In turn, this will mean that we cannot provide you an overall mark or grade for the course. If there is just one assessment in a course and that is missing then the course will not show at all.

Banked marks

The screen will show any marks that have been 'banked'. For example, if you passed an assessment in a course last year, but are re-sitting another assessment in the same course this year, the mark from last year will show because it has been 'banked'.

Exceptional circumstances and Mark Changes

Provisional marks are published before the Exam Boards have completed their work. This means that Exceptional Circumstances will not have been considered yet. You will need to wait until final results are published on 18 July to find out the outcome of your Exceptional Circumstances submission.

Similarly, if you already know that a mark will be changed this will not necessarily show because it may need to be ratified by the exam board. Again, you will need to wait until final results are published on 18 July.

If things have not gone to plan

Check out the LSE Student Support Map for details of the different types of support available at LSE. We understand that getting unexpected results may be a worrying experience, if you need emotional or wellbeing support you can access LSE's wellbeing resources or contact your doctor. What happens next will depend on a number of factors such as whether there are other assessments in the course and how many attempts you have remaining. Your Academic Mentor will be able to guide you through what happens next.

It is not possible for the Student Services Centre to discuss provisional marks. You cannot appeal against provisional marks or request an administrative mark check for them.

Class Grades

Class grades provide an overall assessment of your work over the course of the year. Class teachers award grades based on attendance, class participation (engagement and quality), presentations and marks received for essays and/or problem sets. Class grades are sometimes used by your home institutions in determining credit transfer.

Unfortunately class grades do not show correctly in Student LfY. We're working on fixing this issue but in the meantime we've also sent you an email with all your provisional marks, including your class grade. We've inclulded all your marks in this email so that you have everything in one place.

There is no numerical mark for class grades, just a summary letter grade obtained from your class teacher at the end of the academic year.

Grades

Where we have a full set of marks from your assessments available, there will also be an overall grade available. You can interpret the grades using the list below:

A+ = 75%+
A = 70% - 74%
A- = 65% - 69%
B+ = 60% - 64%
= 55% - 59%
B- 50% - 54%
C+ = 45% - 49%
C = 40% - 44%
Fail = 0% - 39%

These grades are also used for class grades (labelled as class assessments).

Deferred assessments

If you have deferred an assessment then it will show with a status of Deferred. The overall grade for the course will also show with no overall mark, and an overall grade of Deferred. Visit  when will I take my deferred assessment to find out when you will sit deferred assessments.

Absences

Missing Results
