Finding Courses

stage one of the process

There are lots of tools to help you find the right courses

Please read the course selection overview for information about stages two and three.

When planning your studies, it's essential to consult your programme regulations. These regulations outline:

  • Which courses you can take as part of your degree.
  • Which year of study each course is available to you.
  • Links to individual course guides, providing detailed information about course content, assessment, and teaching.

You can access course guides in two ways:

  • Directly through your programme regulations.
  • Via the full list of all course guides, which is updated annually.

Some programmes also allow you to choose courses from an outside option list, giving you the flexibility to explore subjects beyond your core area of study.

Before finalising your course selections, make sure to check the timetable. This will help you:

  • Identify any clashes between courses.
  • Plan your schedule effectively.

Timetables are available online and should be reviewed before making your final choices.

The LSE Calendar (Programme Regulations and Course Guides)

The LSE Calendar pulls together lots of regulations about your programme and courses into one place.

Using the calendar you can:

  • View your programme regulations for either undergraduate or postgraduate
  • Confirm which courses you are permitted to take under which year of study
  • Access a list of all courses for either undergraduate or postgraduate
  • View a course guide for each course which includes teaching arrangements, content, assessment, reading and survey results

Timetable Information

You can use the online teaching timetables to work out if the courses you'd like to take are likely to clash. These are published between mid-August and mid-September each year.

Please find these timetables available on the timetable webpages

You may also want to check the non-degree language class timetable if you're thinking of taking a language course outside of your programme, also available on the timetable webpages.

Course Content

If you have any questions about the content of the course(s) you are considering, please contact the relevant teaching department(s).

In some cases you may also be able to view course content from previous years on Moodle.

You can view a course guide on the LSE Calendar for each course which includes teaching arrangements, content, assessment, reading and survey results.

You can browse past exam papers for digitised copies of past January or Spring exams from the last seven years.

Remember, it is advisable to have a few "back-up" courses in mind in case any of your preferred courses are already full.

General Course students should also read General Course choosing your courses.
